Can I get Garry's Mod if I only have Portal?

I got Portal separate from the Orange Box, and am now wondering if I should get Garry's Mod and if it would even work.
Any help or information would be muchley appreciated.

Hi. Welcome to TSF!

I think you just need to own a Source based game, and have played it at least once. So yes Garry's Mod should work.

Any of the following games can be used to fulfil Garry's Mods requirements. Except HL2: Deathmatch.

Also in the tool tab download SDK Base and SDK Base OrangeBox. This will give you extra models and textures from TF2, HL2 and Counter-strike. It wont give you all of them but i think its the majority.
