Microsoft Reportedly Using ATI GPU For Next Xbox

Quote:
ATI cards have been fueling consoles for quite a long time now, having most recently been included in both the Xbox 360 and Nintendo Wii. And apparently Microsoft is happy, because it appears that ATI will be providing the GPU for the next generation as well.

Fudzilla is reporting that Microsoft is happy with the Xenos GPU and want to continue using it, particularly because it will enable them to maintain compatibility with older games. Based on the delivery timeline, the site speculates that it will be a 28 nm part.

Word is that the next generation was supposed to start next year. However, due to the recession, both Microsoft and Sony has reportedly pushed their plans back to 2012. That would make the Xbox 360 seven years old when its successor arrived, and the PS3 six years old.

Microsoft has kept quiet about its future plans, and Sony is still sticking to its ten year plans for the PS3. But if the new consoles are really due to arrive in 2012, then we'll likely be hearing more rumors like this starting next year.

Re: Microsoft Reportedly Using ATI GPU For Next Xbox

I did not know Wii or the 360 used an ATI card, mainly because I can't find the videocard specs to any console, anywhere.
I only know that the GameCube used an ATI card because of the little "Graphics by ATI" sticker on it. What other consoles used ATI? Anyone that used Nvidia or some other one?

The PS3 used an Nvidia card based on the GeForce 7 GPU, I forget if it was derived from the 7600GT or 7800GT.

Both the PS3 and 360 have a video card about as strong as a X1950 or so. The Xbox 360 was made in 2005 or 2006 so its old technology now.

Then how is it possible to have as good as or better then graphics as PC's? They have perfect frame-rates and everything.

Not sure of that, L4D on 360 lacked a bit of anti-aliasing and graphical details rather than on the PC, the frame-rate was a bit low too at least in my perspective. And L4D was on the Source engine for crying out loud!

The Xbox 360 isn't so hot. 720p is 1280x720, and it manages Fallout 3 at medium settings with no or very little AA at ~30-40fps. So about like a 9500GT.

Re: Microsoft Reportedly Using ATI GPU For Next Xbox

The ATi GPU in the 360 was the first introduction of unified processing units (48 in total), which are now a standard. The first XBox used a derivative of the GeForce 3 which also gave nVidia a leg up on the DirectX 8.1 spec. Too bad they failed on getting a DX9 chip out before ATi.

They don't have to run windows, and the games are highly optimized. But nevertheless dumbed down considerably compared to the PC versions.

I don't think it can, aside from resolution. At least not in most games. But from what I saw of Fallout 3 on my friend's Xbox, it looks like medium settings on the PC, with low AA levels. Not very scientific, but that's my guesstimate.

The games will determine what resolutions and other effects are used. Most run at 720p with a few doing 1080i and 1080p.

Re: Microsoft Reportedly Using ATI GPU For Next Xbox

YOu guys are talking about current Xbox graphics and there are no current CPU's or anything that uses the 28nm chip yet. I can think that this will be faster than the current graphics cards out there.

The Xbox 360 was very high tech for a year or two and then it went down quickly once newer CPU's and graphic cards came out.

Re: Microsoft Reportedly Using ATI GPU For Next Xbox

an game is optimized depending on what console is going to be released
games that releases for the PS2, PS3, X360 and PC, demands a lower minimum system requirements than the games that are made for the Next gen Consoles and PC cause, the game is optimized to run on a PS2
X360 is old yes.
try to compare Assassin's Creed DX10 on PC with the X360!!
if you have a nice video card and at least a 19" LCD, any PC would kick all the console's ***
