I've been a PC gamer for a long time, but I see the shift being made to consoles. I got an HDTV to plug it into. What I'm wondering is which console to get..the XBox 360 or the PS3. Which is better? I plan to play online quite a bit and I've heard you have to pay Microsloth to play online but you don't with the PS3.
I kinda want to rule out the PS3 because I already have a Blu-ray player, but I'm open to suggestions. I'm mainly into FPS games, and sound is important so how do these consoles hook up to sound? Any suggestions or information offered would be greatly appreciated. |

Re: XBox 360 or PS3?
If your mainly into FPS games, the PC gaming wins all the way.
But if you seriously want to downgrade from a gaming pc to a console, then i reommend getting an xbox 360. They are better value for money and can play pretty much any game the PS3 with the same graphics but for a cheaper price.

Re: XBox 360 or PS3?
Well, I personally prefer the PS3. Why? I like the controllers better, BD drive, and mostly personal experience (bad experience with the Xbox 360). Also, I don't like spending cash every month just so I can play online. Although I must admit that the Xbox 360 online services are better than the PS3.
So if you don't mind spending money to play games online, go for the Xbox 360. If you'd rather play online for free, go PS3. |

Re: XBox 360 or PS3?
PC>consoles.
Oh..consoles ok. PS3, because you don't have to pay monthly for a service that should be free. You get blue ray and they cut the price in half. Instead of paying 400 dollars it's now like just 200. I personally see moving from pc to console as a huge downgrade but w/e. If you don't mind paying 15 bucks monthly or how much it is go for xbox 360. |

Re: XBox 360 or PS3?
Xbox live is $42.00 for 13 months or $3.24 a month not too bad for the server availability they provide.

Someone needs to program a 360 emulator for the PC...

Re: XBox 360 or PS3?
I've always felt that PC games had dramatically better graphics than consoles, but with a big screen HDTV I was kinda hoping I could get into it. Every two years I drop $1200-1500 building a new gamer pc and that's some serious change. My PC went tits up and I can't figure this one out. I could just get one of these consoles right now and be up and running. I'm jones'n, man.

Re: XBox 360 or PS3?
It depends what games you want to play really. I'll parrot everyone else here and say that PC eats consoles for breakfast lunch and tea.. (and a midnight snack) when it comes to gaming, but if you must go to consoles, then it depends what you want. If you can stand pixelated laggy graphics then the 360 is probably a better choice for you because it has a much stronger lineup of games etc etc. However if you like your game to be more than just a fuzzy blur and you're used to the awesomeness of PC graphics then a PS3 might be a better way to go.

Re: XBox 360 or PS3?
Come now, it isn't *that* bad.
![]() I have had two 360s die on me now though, and though there are several 360-exclusive games I want to play I don't think I'll buy another. Too unreliable. MS is very obviously a software company, they're crap with hardware.

Re: XBox 360 or PS3?
Well maybe they aren't quite that bad, but I'm just used to uber-nice graphics in true HD and whenver I see Xbox 360 graphics I go *hurk!* But from what I've seen of the PS3's graphics it can do some fairly nice stuff. My friend's first Xbox died, so he bought a 360, it died too, so he bought another, it died too so he went and played WoW and now he's a Blizzombie.

Re: XBox 360 or PS3?
Get the ps3, not the Xbox. The PS3 will not break down, and the graphics are same, may be even better. Also, you said you want to play online. With the ps3, you can play online for free, but with the xbox you have to pay.
I just bought a ps3 for the same reason. I am currently playing Call of Duty modern warfare with it, but I mostly play pc games. Again, can anyone tell me what stores (in the USA) sell a large selection of PC games. It seems that most stores just sell ps3 and xbox games

Re: XBox 360 or PS3?
The one good thing they make in hardware is the 360 controller I really prefer it over nany other controller. I did get a X6 keyboard but for some reason the software that I'm supposed to use with the keyboard remembers keystrokes and types out things. So I uninstalled that.
Ok so lets get one thing straight, the newest graphics card by ATI (5870) is as strong as 2 GTX 285's. My current graphics card overclocked around 17% (need to change my system is closer to a GTX 280 now. A xbox 360 graphics card is 4 x slower than my graphics card. WHen Crysis 2 with the cry engine 3 comes out it will be as powerful as about medium on a PC using regular Crysis. Now if you wait around 6 or 7 months the better 360 exclusive games come out on the PC. Take GTA 4 for instance. Also dropping $1200 - $1500 every 2 years is excessive. reuse the old and upgrade as you go. Dual cores were and are still the standard for gaming. There have been good dual cores since late 2006. Graphics cards are the big worry with games. Every 2 years if you drop $300 or so on the new graphics card you will be good for another couple of years. I would say I have dropped around $1200 over the last 4 years or so on new things maybe more. Upgrade as you go! And the game servers servers are usually always better on the PC. |

Quote:
The PS3 graphics card was based on the GeForce 7800GT. My 4870 could tear it to ribbons. I also agree on upgrading PCs over time. If you invest in a good case and power supply then you only need to upgrade the graphics card every 2-3 years, and the CPU every 3-4 years if you're into overclocking. You do a total system overhaul/replacement every 4-6 years, and spend about $800-1200 when you do so. That allows you to keep a good spec sheet without paying an outrageous amount of money.

Re: XBox 360 or PS3?
PS3 will be good, because when I used XBoX, it gives really annoying problems. Now will I play or take the machine to a mechanic every now and then. Though PS3 is not perfect, but obviously better.

Re: XBox 360 or PS3?
Also you have to take into account the risk of getting a red light of doom on the xbox.

Re: XBox 360 or PS3?
That red light of doom is usually just due to the fact that like any console out there, yes I do lump them together, they never have enough cooling in them.
If you do buy a 360 you should get one of these to cool it off more. It draws power from a separate AC adapter so no extra power strain on the system which will make it last longer. Intec Turbo Cooler $15 |

Re: XBox 360 or PS3?
Hmmmmm.... I couldn't have asked for a more thorough consortium of knowledge on the topic. Thanks to everyone for their input. Now I'm thinking I may just replace the busted parts in my PC and keep going. I built this thing in Jan of 08 and all I really play are Battlefield 2142 (2 years old) and the NFS games. I do have some good parts in my PC but may need suggestions on what else to replace:
Intel E6750 dual core overclocked to 3.06 Asus P5N32E-SLI motherboard Kingston 4-4-4-12 RAM, 2 Gigs Nvidia 8600 GTS lame video card (have another 8600 GT but don't think I can link them) X-Fi extreme gamer sound card thermaltake 600w possibly busted power supply thermaltake 100mm cpu fan Vista ultimate 32 bit OS Samsung 906BW 19" 2ms possibly busted monitor What can I do with this pile of junk? |
