I'm throwing a trump card down here- starcraft for best RTS of all time. I've never seen an RTS game that has came even close to topping that. Not even any of the C&C games, which are good anyway.

I don't think anyone's said it yet, so...

Psychonauts. Some of the best writing in any game, ever.

Only bad thing about it? The PC version has memory leaks like a digital Titanic. On some levels my RAM usage will go up by 20MB PER SECOND.

A lot of things look good by screenshots, but when you play it you think "wow what a waste of money".

Playing a demo of a game is the best way to see if you like it, IMO. Doesn't cost anything, and you get more than you can from reviews or gameplay videos.
