Check this out:http://www.gamespot.com/features/620...opslot;thumb;2
What are your opinions on this? Is this the end of high-priced video cards as we know them? |

Re: Streaming PC games over the internet?
There will never be an end to high end video cards
The data will still need to be processed also I don't like playing online all the time and for the foreseeable future I can't see the internet usage cap being lifted too much what about internet speeds? most people won't have the speed this service requires This is a service that will go bankrupt |

Re: Streaming PC games over the internet?
I agree with you. There will be a lot of hype over this, but then people will realize how much bandwidth this really eats up. I'm sure parents will be thrilled when their network slows to a crawl because Johnny is playing Crysis on maximum settings. Cost will be another issue. You have to pay a subscription fee. And there are various levels. Which, of course means that the people who can't afford the huge fees aren't going to get all the features.

Re: Streaming PC games over the internet?
it's all over the place.
i think it's great but far from realistic. not now and not in the near future. plus there are many issues that have not been addressed yet

I was just reading about this on Kotaku.
The problem I have with cloud computing is bandwidth and lag. In Australia, even living close to an ADSL2+ exchange, you still get like 20-30ms ping, if the exchange is further away, it's only going to get worse. Add to that the fact that a decent ADSL2+ plan is easily $80 - $100 per month, then add all the fee's for this new Onlive thing, you could potentially be looking at $200 per month. On the other hand, you could spend $2000 on a computer, that will last you at least 3 years, possibly more. Another thing, probably not a problem in the USA or UK, but in Australia, ISP's have really terrible download limits. A lot of the larger plans that let you download 100Gb per month are quite expensive. I can imagine streaming high quality images at a high framerate for hours at a time would quickly chew through that. Last edited by Tiber Septim; 03-24-2009 at 11:26 PM. Reason: Merged DP |

Re: Streaming PC games over the internet?
just watching youtube videos in high definition chews through bandwidth like a hyper Great Dane goes through dog toys.
I would think 20 mb/s and higher connections are needed with 500gb cap from the ISP something like this company http://www.terago.ca/business-high-speed-internet.html Last edited by Mcninjaguy; 03-25-2009 at 12:31 AM. |

Re: Streaming PC games over the internet?
I have an 80GB limit and i still manage to go over every month. Well with 5 other members its hard not to. (And the fact that Steam is my new game shop)
I like the idea though, a bank of CPUs, GPUs and Memory ticking away allowing hundreds of gamers play the latest games with ease. But imagine if you get a little lag spike on SP it could mean mission fail.. Also i dont think Australia would get this anytime soon. The average house hold connection speed is still only 1.5mb/s or 150kb/s downspeed.

Re: Streaming PC games over the internet?
it's not just the bandwidth of a single connection but the total amount of all clients connected. they would have to have a hugh feed to the inet. feeding just 10 clients would chew up a single T1 line. considering 1000's will be connected and you quickly get the picture. with all that increased traffic on the net, latencies would skyrocket quickly and games would come to a crawl

Lol, yes our net is good but not nearly good enough.
I was thinking some more about this, and it just doesn't make sense. The idea here is to eliminate console's and PC's, and have one unified games system that plays any game right? That won't work. Microsoft , Sony and Nintendo have a lot of pull over developers/publishers. In fact quite a few of them have their own in house dev teams. It's highly unlikely that those companies will licence their games for the Onlive service. Because for every game that is avaliable with Onlive, they are losing out on hardware sales. So essentially, this is just adding a fourth console to the everlasting war. Last edited by Tiber Septim; 03-25-2009 at 11:29 PM. Reason: Merged DP |

Re: Streaming PC games over the internet?
indeed!
and of course not every house can operate that, like you said Australia not ready for that, the middle east has some pretty fast internet (Dubai has up to 7 mb/s) but I don't think they'll be ready for that too. it really needs more than that. I think it's a technology that doesn't fit this time, it needs 5 to 10 years I guess

Re: Streaming PC games over the internet?
found a interesting article
http://g4tv.com/thefeed/blog/post/69....html#readmore seems that its only available in theUS for now and you can play with a 1.5mb/s internet speed since it auto scales quality I prefer playing my games offline though and owning them |

Re: Streaming PC games over the internet?
The more I find out about this service the more interesting it is. It might be good for some people, but I prefer my games be on my own hard drive. That goes for the whole 'cloud computing' thing in general. I want to be able to store my data locally, rather than have to access it over the internet.
