Good news for impatient gamers ;-)

From http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/7946697.stm

Quote:
A British company has launched a new way of downloading games.

Unlike other systems, Awomo allows people to start playing a game before all the software has been downloaded. The developers say that waiting times between clicking a download link and actual game-play have been slashed.

"What Awomo does is take the core files used to play the game, which is enough to get you up and running, and then download the rest of the content in the background," said Mr Walkden.

One of the games on offer is Tomb Raider Legend. While the game weighs in at 7.2GB on a typical internet connection, users will only need to download 652MB before they can start playing. Although the other files are needed, they are not required in the initial stages and can be downloaded in the background.

A good idea but it sounds like there could be a lot of complications.

What would happen if you raced through a particular map, only to find that the next map hadn't finished downloading yet?

lol yeah, there would be a lot of bugs. And not many games these days would be eligible for this download. Games like Crysis, GTA IV, FarCry2, Empire: Total War. They are all stored in archive form.

Re: Good news for impatient gamers ;-)

or like Oblivion or Fallout 3 you need the whole game to play it, not in pieces

Re: Good news for impatient gamers ;-)

well the whole game is compressed in to one big file like Fallout 3 (archived form) I doubt steam will have this method

I think L4D might be able to work this way you could play No Mercy right away but I dunno. It feels like you'll be lagging if try to play online right away. I can wait for a game because I have lots of good games so playing newest one right away is cool it's not like it matters if I have to wait a couple hours anyways. I mean is this for people like Dave Chappelle's Crack character? so ansy they'd do anything to just play it right away?

What about lag? your cpomputer is downloading and writing to disk while installing it and you'll be able to play it? sounds like something poorly thought out.

Re: Good news for impatient gamers ;-)

well I just thought of lag part myself... but imagine if you have a couple hard drives in raid 0 config. and an Core I7 cpu than you should be fine... it could depend on fast a computer is.
