eve online: purchase

i was thinking in buying the retail of eve online but before i do i want to know some things about it

first i want to know the ralation with a traditional mmorpg in the battle part of the game. are the battles like all other mmorpgs, like targeting an enemy and then weapons start to fire and dealing x amount of damage or miss(even though its obvious you hit him, hate that system) depenting on your traits and attributes or you can realese counter measures, evade or even use anti-projectile weapons to destroy missiles and stuff.

second, is it the trading system extremely complex

third, is navigation complex

Re: eve online: purchase

The best way to get answers to your questions for EVE is to try it out, get a 21 day trial from Steam: http://store.steampowered.com/app/8510/

I've been playing it for a few years, since closed beta. It can seem a bit overwhelming for a new player as it has a very high learning curve, but is very rewarding in the long run.

that could be a problem. i tried several times to download the client and run the trial. but the thing wont even create an account. a friend of mine told me(who happens to be a proffesional pc expert) told me that the matter is somewhat complex and that i should ask someone to let me play with his account or ask someone. the problem is that no one around here plays eve(they play only games like world of warcrap. lineaids etc) so i decited to ask.

Re: eve online: purchase

I bought Eve online but I found it very tedious. It has its merits though.

The navigation is a little complicated but there's around 5,000 different galaxies all with varying degress of piracy and some aren't safe at all. Yes Galaxies, the universe is huge!

Trade isn't too complicated, its a steep learning curve but not too complicated to get to know. YOu can display cheapest prices in your menu from about 15 jumps away.

Fighting is like this

you have missles, artillery, lasers, guns of all sorts to equip on your ship. The leveling is a half and half mixture of making money to get better ships and better armaments.

Range plays a big role in this game some guns can only shoot a certain distance and the closer you are more 100% chance you'll have of hitting the enemy. missiles always hit their target but again have a range. you'll go form little frigates to massive Captital ships (capital ships cost a billion dollars I think or is that dreadnoughts?)

If you want some complexity in your MMORPG then eve is definitely it. and joing a guild is important as its very hard to do a lot of later missions by yourself

Re: eve online: purchase

Eve online is not like anything else I have played, presenting some variables that just dont exist in most MMOs.

If you intend to play I suggest you decide what of the options listed above sounds like the most fun, and research the best racial options for that choice.

Some of what I like most though:

Piracy is a big part of the game...if you play long enough, and fly close enough, or through low security space you will likely meet a group of players who will tackle your ship, and force you to choose to either pay them a ransom or die fighting, wich is likely if they are prepared. that is actually good solid fun.

You train all the time. No joking, you choose what to train in, and it happend 24/7 as long as you have something actively training. And you can set up some convenient mods to help in that.

You get the joy of running out your shiny new Battleship, maybe you cant afford all the good gear to fit it yet, maybe you dont have the training to operate the armer repairers yet..heck maybe you dont have the cash for the insurance just yet..take it out and have fun!

Then sometimes you get to watch said ship explode...knowing you have no money to replace it...agony of defeat moment. Just dont get that in most MMOs..watching a couple of months of invenstent blow into tiny bits.

Re: eve online: purchase

i am a long time player of eve and combat is nothing like any other MMO i have played

if you're thinking of trying it I'd wait 2 weeks as there is a major FREE expansion comming in that time frame that deals with the learning curve and makes getting in to eve so much easier the free expansion also has more space (47% more i think) wormholes many more new ships the ability to walk in stations plus station activities and much more other stuff.

if you decide you cant wait and try the game then feel free to ask me any questions in game via private conversation or eve mail. my character is called Mephistophilus. i recommend you copy/paste that name :)

if i don't respond or decline your convo please try again later as i will be in combat

Re: eve online: purchase

as i figured out by now the game must be for hardcore players. i read in mags that it has a very slow start and as danzen said you can loose months of hard work in game in an instant. but i like what i hear especialy when i read about cally a guy that stole 700billion ehhh ick(i think thats how its called).
there is a question i had though. i read somewhere that in 12 of march a new eve retail box will be released. it will contain all previous expansions plus the new apocrypha expansion. is that info valid? anyway, there is a game that it came out that i was waiting(burnout paradise for pc) and i am in a big delima. so it goes 50-50

Re: eve online: purchase

I hope I did not give the wrong impression, you can lose evrything, but it depends on how close to the edge you like to live.

In most MMORPGs, if you want the really good xp, you have to play right on the edge of disaster on every pull, your whole raid, party or in this case your ship, are in danger every time you engage an enemy.

Eve is no different, I have lost a bunch of ships, but enjoyed the game more for it, in fact I enjoyed the game a little less when my Dominix was fitted, and I was skilled enough to handle all the level four missions. And not to mention that I at the time had the ISK and the insurance to lose it and replace it.

My point was not that Eve was a nightmare, but that it is a fantastic MMO, it requires you to pay attention, and to learn your toon and your ships. Eventually if you become part of a corp that goes to war you get a whole new experience running from some enemies, chasing others...you cant get some of what Eve offers anywhere else.

Re: eve online: purchase

Guys!! Things got complicated!! The two games became 4 with hawx and empire total war added. I gathered enough money to buy both eve and burnout, but hawx and empire are off the scale March is one helluva month
Im gonna wait for price drop on hawx and empire, or just buy hawx, or just buy empire special edtition. OMG!!! Too many tempting options Funny think is that the games are totaly diffrent with each other! eve online was my only choice now there are other competitors too. Oh what should i choose

i tryed it out too. it was nice but i dont like the story which is millitary thriller based and not like ace combat. i recall in AC5 the moment chopper died in order to down his aircraft on the center of a stadium to avoid populated areas.i almost cried. what i want is a small bit of japanese touch.
anyway now its not a matter what i will buy but at what order i will buy them
