What are Half-Life mods?

ok. I have Half-Life 2 and love it. But, I keep seeing people talking about these "mods" you can download for it. Could someone explain what these are exactly? Are they free? Where can I get them? Thanks :)

People make 3rd party mod either based off of HL2 or they use the engine to make their own game.
Some good Mods are:

Insurgency (Free)
Zombie Master (Free)
Dystopia (Free)
Garrys Mod 10 (Price $9.99)
Hidden: Source (Free)

and many more Via Steam

Goldeneye Source is a mod that is a remake of Goldeneye 007 for the N64. AWESOME.

all mods are free. those who made mods (commonly called modders) don't have the right to sale the mods because they don't own the rights of the core game. modders who made a game based on the engine can't sale it either because they don't own the rights of the game engine, although its possible to sale them. so yes the mods are FREE!!!!!!
