Violence in Games
Hi Guys
![]() I was just going through a few lectures slides (the unit is called Computer Games Studies ) about violence in games and I was just curious about what you guys here thought. We always get people saying it's bad in some way but I'm curious as to what the gamers (who play the games the most) think about the violence in games today?

Re: Violence in Games
well its no worse than what ya see on the nightly news.with the game its not even real violence.so i dont have a problem with it.i think it comes down to the individual if they are going to commit violence,or not.

Re: Violence in Games
Yeah as Pharoah says it no bad than what you see in the news, it is no worse than what you see in films aswell. But the reason people probably see it as bad is due to the fact you are controlling the violence.
With the realism of the body physics in GTAIV actually has me avoiding killing people, (well, inocent people anyway) the first time i shot a person in the game and they dropped to the floor with, what i would imagine is startling realism, made me feel really bad. |

Re: Violence in Games
It's indeed a fairly violent game, if you choose to make it so, but I was never tempted to kill innocent people in the previous GTA games and I don't in this one (unless I'm running away from the cops) But I know for certain that should a need arise in real life for me to run away from the cops by killing an innocent person, I'd go in quietly. Personally I don't believe violence in games makes any impact on the gamers as some reports would have you believe.

Re: Violence in Games
Seconded as im a massive FPS fan and have played a lot of FPS games from the original doom all the way to Crysis and it hasnt affected me at all.
IMHO youd have to be a pretty screwed up person to start with to get so influenced by violence in games that you start to copy it IRL.

Re: Violence in Games
Just like pharoah said, the violence in games is just as bad as what you'd see on the news. Actually, things here in San Antonio are FAR worse than things are in Liberty City!

Re: Violence in Games
I dont get why people compare games to tv/movies.
GTA for example has you playing the role of a violent person. The reason people pick on games is because in a game your immersed into the role of the character your playing. Its not like watching a movie or news where your not actually making any choices or playing the role of a virtual killer. A few weeks ago i was playing CoD4 and a couple of people were arguing over what guns in real life were more powerful. I not blaming games in anyway, I actually enjoy them. But games have much more of an influence psychologicaly then movies/tv/news ever will. Anyways im not tryin to blame games for anything. People have to be responsible for their own actions. If a underaged kid plays a violent game and commits a crime then the finger should be pointed at the parents, not a game. |

yes the parents are partly to blame, for not raising the child properly, but overall it's yourself that carries out your own actions. but it seems that the media and the mass consenseus (sp?) of people can't accept that some people are just down right scum / sick in the head. Look at the bulger case over here, they blamed childsplay 3 on influencing them, not the fact they were horrid sick twisted individuals. Then a few years later to that, another kid stabbed his cousin (i believe with a screwdriver) this led the blame onto the videogame Manhunt. |

Re: Violence in Games
I used to play lot of violence games [Quake, Soldier of Fortune, Max Pain, Painkiller etc.] but I was kid and thought it was funny
![]() But now, I just play World of Warcraft 2-3 hours per day when I came from work and I am feeling very good after playing it. I am not for violence and bloody games anymore. But do not think they twist kids minds because violence is on every corner of the world in any shape. Games are just part of it. |

Re: Violence in Games
I am in agreement with all of you guys that video games are not to blame. I have to say that, the first time I saw someone fall from a high perch in GTA4, it made my girlfriend dig her head into my shoulder and made me give a big "oooooooo".
I remember that kid in America in tried to blame him killing his female friend because he thought she was a "ho" on GTA, it was just after the release of GTA 3 I think. I think the censorship organisations are starting to soften up a bit, for instance, manhunt 2 is going to be released over here in the UK and I will be buying it just to see what all the fuss is about. I think it is only Austrailia that still has quite strict censorship laws. They have censored certain parts of GTA over there.

Re: Violence in Games
I have seen a lot of violence, and continue to do so every day.
I dont think computer games have nothing to do with it, its more likey the mentality of the people who fight/kill. Computer games are just harmless fun...

Re: Violence in Games
That sigs sums up the whole thing dj_kiwi. What it's all down to is the mental state of the person in question as I see it. If someone is mentally imbalanced, they're going to do what they're going to do regardless of what, if any, games they play. I think I played Doom when I was about 8. Even then I knew that it was a game and killing someone with a chainsaw isn't advisable Dad sometimes watched over my shoulder, but he only reminder me where the aliens were coming from He never bought me that chainsaw though....

Re: Violence in Games
Violent games can also be a way for people to vent their anger rather than actually go out and kill someone. Of course if they vented too hard it would break the controller/keyboard.
GTA IV FTW!!!!! |

Re: Violence in Games
hahaha, you are right kiwi, I am hearing voices too!!! But it is up to people to do what they want to do.
If someone is crazy he will kill someone after he watch debate between Barack Obama and Hilary Clinton too, or after listening Barbara Straisend, or after watching movie with Ben Affleck
