little RAM in consoles

hello guys.

I'm just pondering why pc's need like 2 Gb of RAM to play a game but a ps3 and xbox 360 need like 256 Mb.

i don't get it, because surely a whole level in resistance fall of man would take up more than 256 MB... and even if each level did fit on on that tiny RAM why have such huge information available on the BLU -ray disc when only 256 Mb can be loaded at once... please clear this up for me cause i tried to google this and nothing came up.

my guess is that the ps3 and 360 can load new content quickly so larger RAM isnt required, but im just thinking that because of the mass production of these consoles, it wouldnt hurt to stick a 1 Gb stick of RAM in the console, maybe the console will cost like $10 more but will be better.

please comment on this.

Re: little RAM in consoles

512MB GDDR3 system RAM (700 MHz) plus 10 MB embedded DRAM (eDRAM) frame buffer

This is all i could find for the 360.

Re: little RAM in consoles

Please keep in mind that gaming consoles are dedicated towards one task - gaming. PCs on the otherhand are designed for general use, and as such both hardware and software are designed to accommodate.
