What will the performance gain be

My current rig is quite low end and incapable of any serious gaming. I get <30fps in Halo Combat Evolved, how sad is that?

SiS-661 motherboard
Celeron D 2.4Ghz processor
1gb PC3200
nVIDIA GeForce 7600GS 256mb graphics card
Thermaltake 400w power supply
Windows Vista Ultimate

Anyway, I'm currently building a new rig and I am wondering how well it will perform on newer more graphic intensive games such as Oblivion and Bioshock.

Foxconn Intel P9657AA-8KS2H motherboard
Intel Pentium 4 2.8Ghz HT
G.SKILL 1GB DDR2-800 RAM
Sapphire X1950 Pro 256mb graphics card
Antec Basiq 500w Power Supply
Windows Vista Ultimate

I would also like to know how much performance gain I would get when I have the money to upgrade the Pentium 4 to a Core 2 Duo E6600 and add another gig of G.SKILL DDR2-800 RAM.

Thankyou in advance :)

Re: What will the performance gain be

The video card was a nice improvement, however to play those games at full detail you will need an 8800 series card. I would look at the E6420 because its much cheaper and get the video card upgrade before the extra RAM if possible. Also, I would get a different PSU because that Antec is too weak and has very cheap capacitors.

Re: What will the performance gain be

When you say the PSU is too weak, do you mean the computer isn't going to have to power to even turn on or I will experience slow performance?

Re: What will the performance gain be

It will work, but you should be looking at a quality 600w PSU for the X1950 series. Also, the Basiq series used very bad quality caps which is more urgent.

Re: What will the performance gain be

I'll look into replacing the PSU instead of a second stick of ram then. So anyway, back on topic, how much performance increase can I expect?

Re: What will the performance gain be

the difference between a 7600,and a 1950 is going to be huge.the 1950 is alot more powerfull a video card than a 7600gs.

Re: What will the performance gain be

Thats awesome to hear, how about the P4 2.8Ghz over the Celeron D 2.4Ghz? Then eventually a Core 2 Duo (undecided but I'm leaning towards E6600) over P4 2.8Ghz?

Re: What will the performance gain be

that cpu will blow a celeron away.if you need a cheaper cpu to start with. one of the core 2 allendale cores would kill that p4.

these cpu's are the ones im talking about

Re: What will the performance gain be

Yeah I've thought about them before but the reason I'm leaning towards a higher end cpu is because it's for Christmas and isn't gonna cost me anything XD Thanks for the info Pharoah :)

Re: What will the performance gain be

that p4 would not be better than a low end core 2 chip.your looking at mhz thats not the only thing to look at.the core2 cpu's architecture makes them way faster in processing power than a p4.

Re: What will the performance gain be

Yeah I know, but the P4 is just temporary, Christmas isn't far off and in the mean time I will probably only make the money for a better PSU and possibly another stick of ram. Unless I find a job :P

Re: What will the performance gain be

thats cool the p4,and a 1950 is going to blow away the celeron, and 7600gs.you will be able to play games at way higher settings than the current stuff.
