Question If you were going to upgrade tomorrow...

What type of system would you end up building? AMD or Intel?

I personally purchased an Athlon X2 6000+ not too long ago, I'm extremely happy with it, but I'm a bit of an AMD Fan Boy. For the longest time AMD was the only way to go if you were a frequent gamer, but which company *really* is the best now?

(Please check your opinions at the door and be as objective as possible.)

Re: If you were going to upgrade tomorrow...

I also am an AMD fan.I have the 5600=@2.8Ghz.Right now I believe Intel has the edge. But,AMD is coming out with a new chip,Barcelona I believe,in a few days.I would at least wait and see what that has to offer.

Heres a couple links http://multicore.amd.com/us-en/AMD-M...Barcelona.aspx

Re: If you were going to upgrade tomorrow...

If I had infinite money I would go with a dual socket 1207FX system and two dual core Opterons. I would also buy an 8800 Ultra. Intel's quad core design is so inefficient I would not use it for more than 2 cores TBH. AMD's Hypertransport architecture is much more advanced and many of the Opterons have triple HT buses instead of one for 24 GB/s throughput to the Northbridge and a dedicated 12.8 GB/s bus to the memory.

Upgrade tomorrow with what budget? I intend on tossing a new CPU in pretty soon however going go with a a E6750 or sot he 204 one on newegg. 2.66 Ghz 4 MB of cache for a bit over 200 bucks? Sign me up! With amazing OCing potential.

AMD will come back, Intel is on its high horse its nose is too high up for its eyes to see whats ahead, AMD will be in the same postion with oct cores i'm sure.

AMD has been good to me since the days of the 486 so my choice is obvious.

Re: If you were going to upgrade tomorrow...

Socket 1207FX is showing amazing potential, so I would agree. What I hope to see in the future is single socket 1207FX boards aimed at home users with a lesser budget. The AMD QuadFX will hopefully be based on this platform and the new Athlon 64 and Athlon 64 FX chips will be on 45nm. I am also hoping AMD will bring the tri-HT buses down from the Opteron to at least the Athlon 64 FX if not the Athlon 64 X2.

If all this is true when the QuadFX comes out, it will kick the living snot out of the Core 2 Quad.

Re: If you were going to upgrade tomorrow...

I'm an AMD fanboy as well. I have an X2 6000+, and am very hapy with it. A system with an FX-74 would be nice though. I personally will not move to Intel unless I have no other choice. Intel are good, but I feel a loyalty to AMD that I won't just throw away for slightly better performance.

Ok i'm an intel fan, got stock in it so i have to be and its never failed me and the difference between the two isn't HUGE anyways, but intel beat the crap out of amd this year. If i had to upgrade it'd be one of these http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819117132
and another 8800gtx and if money doesn't matter than the coolest case and biggest monitor i could get before i passed out

Re: If you were going to upgrade tomorrow...

yep, but thats technology for ya. Out of all the components of my comp it was the most expensive being around $800 but without a doubt the best one, and probably the best for the long run
