WiC Beta Review
My review of World in Conflict Beta
In this review I will cover four things, well 6 if you want to be very specific. I will cover all the classes; tanks, infantry, air, and support. Also I will cover TA points. Then I will cover what everyone wants to know, the nuke. My impression of the style of play which this game offers. Tanks or armor are important for fire power and staying power. However they die very quickly against enemy air. I cannot describe to you how many times I’ve found an enemy tank group alone and I was able with medium attack helis destroy them as they ran from me. However the armor division has something very important staying power, and fire power against ground units. This can be very critical in battle. Sometimes taking a point requires pure bronze. Crossing a bridge can require balls and strength which only the armor can provide. Infantry are either extremely good or extremely sucks depending on how you use them. One very useful feature is forests, if they go into the forest the enemy can’t pin point strikes against them. However they can on the enemy. Often times if I am defending a point or choke point if there is a forest I hide my anti-tank and infantry units in there. And when an armor column or the rare support group passes me the enemy is killed and never has a chance. However this is one downsize, fire… Fire really hurts and it burns it kills. If the enemy finds out your hiding in a forest be sure that it will either launch fire motors, or napalm at you. This does several things that hurt you. First off it kills the forest so your not hiding there in the feature, then it kills you. Two very bad things. However if infantry is used correctly which I quite haven’t figured out, but many of have they are deadly. Air, air is very important to always watch your air units. Heavy anti-air can knock out an entire squad of air units within seconds. However air can also be very potent especially when you need a fast response team to a critical area. A spawn point being taken by enemy armor? Send in air units they will destroy the armor and keep the enemy from capturing that spawn point, unless of course they get blown up. Then you’re screwed. However air can be very fun because I find there is two basic rules you can play. You can play the air-to-air role where you fly medium attack helis around the map hunting down other helis and the rare tank squadron. Or you can go with the miss up the everything on ground approach with heavy attack helis, which O BTW are basically useless against anything airborne. Support, the best for least. I as my game play love. Support is exactly that support you can be transporting troops repairing allied units, blowing air units out of the sky or blasting up the enemy. I myself prefer blasting up the enemy. Arterially is very fun to play as. There is nothing more fun in my opinion then sitting back and firing at enemy who can’t even see you and sometimes you can’t see them. Arterially doesn’t die much either. Not because they are great at serving in fact in close combat they are useless, and against air just as useless but because so often they are out of range. I can tell you from experience there is nothing worse then having a arterially strike burn down the forest your men are hiding in, or nothing worse then having that point your armored division just captured get blown up because the enemy saw you were hiding there so before you even got there was firing and by the time every arrived your destroyed. Also as an air guy nothing worse then running into 6 heavy anti-airs which O BTW typically means you just lost everything and your hurting waiting for points to get back up in. However support can be useless if your team is pushed back and the enemy is fast moving. IT takes a lot of skill in my opinion to be able to be an effective arterially man. Because you can’t just take aim and fire at a unit because chances are by the time your shell reaches that area that unit is gone. Often times you have to account for several factors when firing at moving units such as fast are they moving, which path they are taking, how long will it take for your shell to reach a point. If you’re good at that you’re a great arterially man. Also you going need team effort to keep enemy away from you. Now onto TA, TA if used right is very important. Example I typically us my TA when I just lost my entire army to bad luck. TA has several different areas such as non-combat aid like aiding your troops and survliance. Then it has attacks like laser bombs, or napalm. Then you got your typical arterially and so forth. You earn points by killing stuff and doing stuff. The nuke, I was worried the nuke was going to be an all powerful ah I just pwnt you weapon. However it isn’t. In fact because of the difficulty in getting a nuke it takes teamwork. It takes a lot to rack up 80 points for the nuke. Often time’s players of the team will decide who gets the nuke and everyone will donate TA points to him. However now you have the nuke do you know how to use it? Is the enemy grouped together to make it worthwhile etc. In a round once my team was hit with not one, not two, but three nukes. We won the game because of our teamwork. However then again a tank destroys a huge area of the map. On top of this the radiation is deadly to your units especially infantry. However it is only a round changing weapon if you know how to use it. My impression of the game, I simply love it. The action RTS which this is simply great. One thing that always kept me from a many RTSs was the building aspect. I simply wanted large fast paced battles which this game offers. Also your troops can be on the ground fighting with 20 seconds of a round starting. The sides are always changing as well, just because one side is winning early on has no meaning to what the other side can do. Because of how the points system works. Everyone can only deploy so many units regardless. The maximum number of units you will have on the battlefield at one time is 6,000 points worth because I believe this is the cap. And you’re always going have access to those 6,000 points. As the game developer said this game is perfect for those who loved RTS, but are never sure how long it’ll take to play a game. Example during school I would love to play C&C3 or RTW in my 45 min break in-between school and work but it takes so long to get a game started and then the game takes so long that it is not worth it. However in WIC I am typically in game within 2 minutes from deciding to play. And that means as late as 22 minutes after I decided to play I will be finished with my first round. And often time’s rounds don’t last the full 20 minutes which they are allowed. IN fact my shortest round was 4 minutes. Anyone as a CS fan will know that’s a very long CS round but an extremely short RTS round. I just want to add in a quick bit about graphics and requirements. This game can go from requiring next to nothing to pushing even the most high end machine to its limits. In interview with head producer said that he has successfully played this game on a geforce 5700. This should take many of us people way back. However the graphics at the high end are amazing. So even you guys with lower end PCs this game will work. Also as add bonus I included some bonus I added in some of my in game screenys. O BTW those settings are fairly low quality settings but still look really good. http://img444.imageshack.us/img444/158/wic4kq1.jpg http://img412.imageshack.us/my.php?image=wic5fp1.jpg http://img412.imageshack.us/my.php?image=wic10ei3.jpg http://img402.imageshack.us/img402/979/wic9de9.jpg http://img502.imageshack.us/img502/5281/wic13dq8.jpg Some images more images http://img530.imageshack.us/img530/522/wic17ij4.jpg http://img526.imageshack.us/img526/766/wic18cd1.jpg http://img263.imageshack.us/img263/1856/wic19fs0.jpg http://img513.imageshack.us/img513/7089/wic28af1.jpg http://img263.imageshack.us/img263/3853/wic36mg8.jpg http://img107.imageshack.us/img107/4779/wic43qn8.jpg http://img528.imageshack.us/img528/764/wic53uu1.jpg This is with AA turned on http://img510.imageshack.us/img510/6448/wichighkg1.jpg When I get my new DX10 card and Vista set up I will show you what a it looks on at all high as in everything maxed to the limit.
