Hi!
In some cases you must upgrade the firmware, you don't have a choice.
Most of the newer games come with the latest firmware and it will not allow you to play without the upgrade.

About the upgrades: Mostly just minor fixes and security things but sometimes they release new features, namely more support for various formats, such as Flash appliaction support for the Web browser.

The only downside to upgrading is that the Homebrew community seems to have stopped at modding at 1.5 as it is the most stable and it has great programs already made that allow users to create and use some really great open source software. Anything from text editors to calculators to emulated games.

In short, if you don't care about any of the open source stuff, then upgrade, it doesn't hurt, but if you do upgrade your stuck with it and you won't be able to use homebrew.

No problem, have fun, the PSP is a great handheld console, as it's good for more than just games.

Happy Gaming!!!
