This is probably the BEST PS2 game I have played as of the release of that system. Graphically it takes the console and truly makes it shine. The FMV cinematics are rendered to look like the game's real-time engine so it's hard to tell when going between the two. The music is obviously MIDI but fits the game very well. Some parts include studio recordings that are just right. Play is simple as you need only one button to attack. Two-button combos are used to execute special attacks. There are even parts where button mashing is required to prevent damage! Compared to the previous .hack// games it's much faster getting around. You also get to use a vehicle called the Steam Bike to travel through towns and fields.

I beat the game in 20 hours at lvl 44. It was NOT easy to do, but well worth it. The ending truly leaves you dying for more.

GRADE TIME!!

Graphics 9/10 - Beautiful, but can get choppy due to that.
Music 8/10 - Good, but obviously MIDI at times.
Gameplay 9/10 - Fast and simple. Very easy to learn and master.
Story 10/10 - OMG.

Overall: 9/10 - Truly awesome.

Does this require previous knowledge about the .hack universe to properly appreciate?

Not completely. One character is recycled but in a rather unexpected way.
