Diablo2 Problems since b4 I installed-rd for explanation

so Ive had diablo 2 expansion on my computer for the longest time and then all of a sudden... (truly nothing changed(i went to bed after playing last night woke up and it wouldn't let me on)) i get this error saying

"windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. you may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item"

so then i uninstalled via control panel. tried to reinstall using an .iso that i originally installed it with... with my own cd key mind you so its legitimate.

after installing the "autoplay/setup" screen normally switches from "install d2" to "play d2" when all done... but it didnt it said "install d2".

so i checked.. its installed on my computer i still get the same error and i cant install it completely then... plz help my favorite game of all time is dying on me lol.

Hi krest115.

Try uninstalling Diablo 2 with RevoUninstaller, restart your computer, then re-install.

thanks ill try that out... i also got info from 3 of my "in real life" friends that play they also are having issues not quite like mine but still issues.. but they arose the same way... nothing changed and a problem arose... they got trojans and then they "healed" them and now it wont work so it might be that... any ideas? im already scanning my computer after uninstalling d2.

I had the exact same problem. I went to play Diablo 2 lord of destruction last night after playing it the night before and the same exact stuff came up. I am trying the revo uninstaller. Let me know if anything else works.

@ krest, if you find any viruses on your computer then it is most likely some form of malware causing the problem. If that's the case you will need to get help from the security section of the forum. Let me know if you find any viruses. Also, the friends who are having the same problem, were they on a network with you at all? If so that makes it much more likely to be a malware issue.

I did the whole Revo thing and tried to reinstall the program and it is still saying the same messages and saying it is not install when I just install it. What should I do next?

so i did a full computer virus scan and i did find 2 trojans... like my friends had said that they found... so i tried to reinstall again and the exact same problem occurs... like nothing was fixed. still thinks its not installed and still with the "windows cannot access the specified... blah blah blah."

now im willing to reformat cuz theres not much to save on my computer but i still want to figure out how to fix it so i can help my friends and so this wont happen again in the future. also to anyone else reading this form that needs this like dannieanne07.

my only guess is that it does have to do with some permission issue. since i v-scanned and everythings clean and im still having the issue. now im not sure how it could be a permission issue since nothings changed so im gonna try installing in safe mode.

ok ok so im sending blizzard support an email when just for kicks i tried d2 again and it works... i have no clue what happened... im so confused? my guess is that after i v-scanned i didnt restart my computer. but any who... thanks you guys for your help ill keep coming to this thread just to see whats happening.

@dannieanne07 try virus scanning and restarting b4 reinstalling. i found 2 trojans, healed them and now today it works so give it a shot.

krest, if this starts to become a problem again then it is most likely that you've still got traces of malware on your system. If that's the case then you'll need to follow these steps and then make a thread in the security section.
