New Slimline PS2

Can anyone help me with the setting up of the new slimline ps2 as I have done everything I am supposed to but it refuses to give a full memory manager on screen - it comes up with half of it missing! Also it refuses to read my memory card even though it is in memory card slot 1. It tells me there is not a card in that slot.

Is this a Sony card or a 3rd party card? Some 3rd party cards don't comply with Sony's rediculous rules for data storage and sometimes will not work properly with the console.
