Question PS3 Display Issue

A little while ago, my brother had gotten a PS3 from one of his friends. He came with an HDMI cable, which my old Sony TV couldn't support. Therefore, recently, we went to a store and bought some Component AV cables. When we tried them on our TV, all the screen did was flash once. After that, you couldn't hear or see anything. I don't know my PS3 model or TV model. All I know is that my old Sony TV supports 480i, 480p, and 1080p, and that it has 4 AV and S Video slots, and 2 Composite AV slots.

Re: PS3 Display Issue

Hello Orion and welcome to TSF!

Below is series of steps to help configure the PS3 to sync with your TV.

1. Now lets reset the Video Output Settings to see if changes occur
A. Turn off the PS3 with the power switch and turn off your TV, unplug both from the socket.
(We are doing this to remove internal settings from the PS3 and the TV)
B. Now, make sure the hdmi, or av cables are plugged into the PS3 and into the TV.
C. Ok, now lets plug both the TV and the PS3 into the power socket.
D. Turn the main power switch on the back of the ps3 back on.(the line on the power button is now pressed)
E. The PS3 should be on standby mode with a red light infront of the system. So with that, lets press that touch-sensitive on/off buttom on the front, until it goes into stand-by mode again.
You should see the cycle go from RED-GREEN-RED. That way you know you held it down enough to reset the settings.
F: Ok, now turn the PS3 on and it should auto-detect all video output settings.
If you don't see anything come up on the screen, flip through the appropriate channels and look for it.

Hey I had a similar issue myself and this worked great. My issue was that I recently brought my Ps3 with me to visit an older brother. (I wanted to show him my demon souls character.) When I was there, I used his component hdmi display cable and changed my settings when I was there. I never set the settings back to sd and so I had no video to my tv when I returned home.

Seeing as my brother lives about 5 hrs away and was the only other person I personally knew whom owned both a ps3 and an hd tv- I would of had to do something crazy like having my brother being my eyes as he goes to the settings himself on his ps3 and telling me what buttons to press on my controller to change the settings back...

Anyways, I just wanted to say thank you. I had suspected that there was a easy fix, and sure enough holding the power button reset the settings.
