PS3 Hardware probem(s)
Ok so I'm fighting with this PS3 which is no longer under warranty since its one of the originals.
So it first happened a couple months ago watching a movie it just shut off. I hadnt messed with it since i was working all summer. So I get to school go to turn it on, it loads up the home screen and i can choose to play the disc (a game) it comes to first screen that says "Playstation 3" then shuts off. The weird thing is that I try again and it works... Now i Dont remember all that it has done and all Ive done. So here what I've done today. This morning it was not working i would turn it on and it would freeze on the today screen and have a couple 300-500 discolared pixels. I open it up disconnect all the components and reconnect making sure all of them are firmly connected. I turn it on and it works fine for about a half hour and then just freezes. Now wenever I go to play a game I get the messed uyp pixels(vga issue) or the blank screen after "playstation 3" screen. Also another thing is that my controller works with the system on but will not turn the system on. It seems like sometimes the thing will just work fine then others it just screws up so I have no clue. Maybe overheating? I have vast knowledge of computer hardware but i dont know about this thing.. I appreciate any help in advanced!! |

Re: PS3 Hardware probem(s)
Maybe we can see if we can access the recovery screen on the ps3
1. Turn off Playstation®3. 2. Hold The power button down; The system will turn on and turn off once again. 3. Once the System has been shutdown, re-press you finger until you hear 2 consecutive beeps 4. When you hear the 2 beeps take finger off power button. 5. You will be promted to plug in your controller via usb and then hit the PS button 6. The Recovery menu will pop up If that doesn't work, lets reset the video settings by 1. (PS3 standby) Hold power button until system resets video settings. 2. Hold until ps3 shuts off again (standby) 3. Hold until you hear 2 quick beeps and let off the power button. Also do you get any kind of orange led lights when you turn it on? |

Re: PS3 Hardware probem(s)
If what Steve suggested does not work, I'm going to say that this is an overheating problem and you need to buy an after-market cooler.

Re: PS3 Hardware probem(s)
Make sure the PS3 is in a well ventilated area, put a fan on it or something, anything to keep it cool, I strongly suggest buying an after-market cooler as I believe it is an overheating problem.

Re: PS3 Hardware probem(s)
You could try reapplying artic silver compound onto the cpu and gpu, then put the heatsinks back on.
I think it is a heat problem as well, but under normal circumstances it should last longer then 10 seconds before any of those kind of issues. |

Re: PS3 Hardware probem(s)
I would not recommend doing what Steve said as not only could it wreck the system if you do it wrong, it's most likely going to void your warranty.

Re: PS3 Hardware probem(s)
Its over 2 years old... no warranty left. Any warrenty would be void anyways since its been sitting in pieces for atleast a month.
Since its happening as soon as i turn it on after days of resting in an unheated apartment.... Im pretty much ruling out overheating... I actually took it apart witht he intent of putting some artic silver on it but couldnt get the the gpu without ripping the whole underside off which is not just screws.. really messud up config Given this do you still think it could be overheating?? |

Re: PS3 Hardware probem(s)
Well, I suppose my recommendation was risky if it wasn't done properly or cautious. But, I'm out of ideas if that's not the cure. I thought since it's likely to be overheating, the cpu and gpu weren't getting sufficient relief due to a defective connection between the heatsinks and the cpu a gpu causing it to shut down.
The only other possibility that I'm thinking of, is that there may be a short somewhere on the pcb motherboard. |

Re: PS3 Hardware probem(s)
I think if there was a short the thing would not run at all.

Re: PS3 Hardware probem(s)
NOw i got no video output at all... system turns on but nothing comes up.
I applied the thermal compound, but it was after this was happening. I tightened everything down hoping maybe the slack was creating gaps between the gput or something but forgot to plug in the fan but regardless, no video. Thanks a lot for all the help so far guys!!!! |
