360 damaging my TV
Hello, I'm having trouble with my 360 and my TV and can't find anything on it anywhere, hopefully someone here can help!
My 360 is linked up to an LCD HD TV that supports 1080i resolution. Simple enough, worked for weeks on this setting. The TV then seemingly randomly started to flicker and the resolution messed up, sometimes while playing the 360, other times while watching TV. But always after playing the 360 for a good few hours. Basically it looks like a problem with the video board, where anything that moves across the screen leaves a massive blurred trail, as well as the contrast and brightness being up the left. I took away the 360 and used on my chunky TV in my room and both this old crapbox and the HD TV work grand. (I also set the SkyHD to automatic resolution with 50Hz instead of constant 1080i and it works perfectly well) Anyway my question is... could the 360 running on 60Hz and/or HD for extended periods of time mess up my HD TV? This is seriously annoying - I don't understand why an HD TV wouldn't be able to support a console putting out HD, or 60Hz. Any suggestions? |

Re: 360 damaging my TV
Hello and welcome to TSF.
Are you sure your HDMI cable is a 1080i cable and not a 1080p cable? Are you sure the Xbox is set for 1080i and not 1080p?

Re: 360 damaging my TV
Thanks for replying.
The cable I'm using to connect to the TV is the official 360 one, set to HD, and I've made sure in the display settings in the xbox start menu that the resolution is 1080i. Also tried 720p but the TV still goes after a while. I'm trying it now with it set not to play HD (regular scart), doesn't look half as good, but it's better than nothing. Fingers crossed. ![]() --- EDIT: After playing it on standard def for 4 hours or so last night, the TV broke this morning again. Looks like it's the refresh rate the xbox puts out - either that or my TV's just incompatible with the console... sigh Last edited by shinyunderpants; 09-02-2009 at 07:02 AM. |

Re: 360 damaging my TV
The official 360 xbox cable may be damaged, this could cause all of the symptoms
you are experiencing. The wire could be torn at the neck of one of the RCA color jacks internally. This happened to me causing all kinds of display issues. |

Re: 360 damaging my TV
That's interesting, I never thought of the cable being the problem. Is there any way of testing this that you know of? I've been waiting to see if my standard TV breaks aswell but it's still working (although it has flickered a few times).
If it was to be the cable I'm guessing Microsoft wouldn't compensate me for the TV anyway... |

Re: 360 damaging my TV
The best way to test if it's the cable or not, is to try the SAME cable on a similar television, or a completely different television, both is preferred.

Re: 360 damaging my TV
I used a multimeter and checked continuity on ground and main on each end of the colored wires, wile bending the neck of the RCA prong and found a short did exist.
However this is a pain in the butt.... if you can do like 5sniper wolf suggested that would be easier... Also i would suggest swapping out the cable with another alike cable perhaps you could borrow one from a friend. |

Re: 360 damaging my TV
Thanks for the help, our TV has completely broken now so we're going to get another one tomorrow I think. I'm waiting for my tube TV to go too (hoping it does in fact so I know for sure it's the cable doing it).
What do you think the chances are of Microsoft recompensating me (for a new lead and the TV) if it is the cable? |

Re: 360 damaging my TV
Absolutely not at all - because the television is not their product, you may have better luck either talking to the store where you bought the television or the company that manufacterers the TV.

Re: 360 damaging my TV
Right I've checked the cable and found the numbers on my multimeter jumped about a fair bit when I bent the cable around a bit at the coloured end. I don't know if this was just caused by me messing with it or whether it's been there all along.
I've emailed Microsoft about the problems I've been having, although I'm not expecting anything relevant in their reply, so I'll probably end up phoning them. techfix, how did you figure out what was causing your display problems (and what were they?) I'm determined to figure this out so thanks for all the help here! |

Re: 360 damaging my TV
Update: Xbox support sent me the usual troubleshooting stuff over email (are all leads connected, is the console turned on etc...). After replying to this they've said my console may need repaired and gave me the details of how to do that.
I feel like this isn't going to help anything as I don't think the console itself is causing this. Any thoughts? |

Re: 360 damaging my TV
Remember when i tested the cable i used the setting on "continuity"
so when you touch the black and red wires you should here a beep. this means the connection is good, but wiggling the connection could show a poor connection (breaking connection). (my box had a bad red connection.... so it flickered on and off and went green at times.) However the problem could be in your Xbox. The only way to really find out is to try your box on a different TV with a different cable. and if it still does it..... send in the box for repair. good luck....shinyu |
