Xbox 360 Media Center Extender
Hey all, i really hope you can help, i'm tearing my hair out here!!
OK from the top; I only got my Xbox 360 two days ago so i'm a noob really! Through an Ethernet cable I have my HP Touchsmart IQ771.uk running Windows 7 RC x86 connected to a BT HomeHub 2.0 router with firmware version 8.1.H.G (Type A) . I have my Xbox 360 connected to the router via an Ethernet cable also. I ran through the extender setup fine, the network tuning tool also yielded the best results. I start WMC on the Xbox and attempt to connect to WMC on the HP. I have an external HDD used to store movies and is included in the W7 WMC library. The media then begins to be added and 2-3 minutes later it cuts out with this message; "Connection Failed The Xbox 360 cannot connect to the Media Center based PC. Make sure the Media Center based PC is turned on and connected to the network. If you continue to see this error, check Media Center Extender Help on your Media Center based PC." I relaunch WMC on the 360 and in nearly exactly the same time as the last it gives a different error screen; "Connection Failed The Xbox 360 was disconnected from the WMC. Make sure that the PC is running and try and reconnect. Would you like to reconnect?" And so it goes on, the two error messages change randomly and are displayed on the 360. Troubleshooting steps i've made. 1. Disconnected external HDD 2. Deleting WMC certificate, uninstalling the device, removing my HP from the 360 and repeating setup wizard. 3. Stopping all 3rd party W7 WMC software running. 4. Ending explorer.exe process tree. 5. Switching my router firewall off leaving only W7 Firewall. 6. Switching my W7 Firewall off leaving only router firewall. 7. Switching both firewalls off. 8. Disabled UAC 9. Attempted to connect the 360 straight to the PC 10. Installed in Vista (same errors) I'm just checking the Event Viewer now, i'll update the post if i find something relevant. If anyone can help i'd love you forever ![]() Regards Last edited by rsvr85; 07-02-2009 at 11:24 AM. |

Re: Xbox 360 Media Center Extender
does the 360 find your pc?
Do you just want to just access video and audio files, or use the WMC interface?

Re: Xbox 360 Media Center Extender
Have you actually gotten into the WMC on the xbox? Or does it disconnect when you try to access media? Also, can you play your media through the normal music/video tabs in on the xbox? Another thing to check is if your router is DHCP enabled. To check this,(in Windows 7) go to Control Panel, Network, Network and Sharing, then click on your "local area connection" , hit details, then it should have a list of things, one of them being "DHCP Enabled" it should say yes. But if it isn't, then this could be your problem. As far as I know, you need a DHCP enabled router in order to share your media with your xbox. Post back with any other findings/info.

Re: Xbox 360 Media Center Extender
Hi csc2000e,
I can get into WMC on the 360, i can access everything as it should be but after 2-3 minutes it cuts out with the error messages. DHCP is enabled. I can play the media through the normal tabs fine. Seems a very weird problem and it's driving me crazy, i hope you can help :) |

Re: Xbox 360 Media Center Extender
Make sure your computer isn't going into sleep mode or anything. And when the WMC disconnects after a few minutes, check your computer to see if an of the sharing services had stopped. Also, check your event viewer and see if it lists why your pc disconnected your xbox.
Additionally, Try this fix from microsoft: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/934542 You might get lucky...

Re: Xbox 360 Media Center Extender
Thanks csc2000e but the fix from MS doesn't work (funnily enough LOL)
My PC isn't going into sleep mode, none of the hardware can turn the PC off to save power either. All the media sharing that is required is set up right. This really is getting on my nerves now, i've tried soooo much but it just won't work!! Thanks for keeping with me :) |
