360 connection straight through modem?

I thought this should be easy, ethernet cable from modem to 360 - power cycle and it should work? not for me!

i got my other half a 360 for christmas and have been meaning to connect it up to xbox live for the fallout extras for ages and thought i would do it today as a surprise........ how wrong was i!

i have been through all the xbox set up screens and troubleshooters, tried static ip, tried running it through my router, and direct to the modem but i still can't get an ip address or it can't use the static address, i have unplugged and replugged, turned everything on and off in every order possible.

i can connect both my pc and very crappy laptop directly to the modem with no problems.

i really don't want to shell out for a wireless adaptor as the xbox is next to the modem and its unlikley we will be using the pc at the same time.

The modem is an abit 256? (says on the bottom) on virgin media.

Any ideas? am i missing something really simple? many thanks in advance!

Re: 360 connection straight through modem?

yep, i have a netgear router - but thats actually further away from the 360 than the modem so i was hoping to be able to just cable from the modem.
i have tried setting it up through the router also with no luck.
i just can't get an ip address whatever i do.

Re: 360 connection straight through modem?

Contact your service provider and identify if the modem is able to talk to the xbox 360. I used the same concept with a motorola modem and it worked fine through COX. What you might need to do is update the modem. Some models have a usb port, plug it into your computer and locate the software for it. It should detect it as a internet connection but its not. You should find a way to update the information if you go to the properties. If it does not, contact your internet service provider and identify they are compatible.

Also, just out of curiosity. Check your Ethernet port on the xbox 360 to ensure that there is nothing bent. If nothing else works, you can possibly get a wireless adapter or get a new modem/router. If that doesn't work, and its the port with the problem, you can't fix it. You would have to get a whole new motherboard aka trash the 360 and get a new one.
