Ps3 freezing on startup

Hi, my son's ps3 freezes on startup,screen covered in small coloured squares ,if anyone can help,please.

Best advice I can give - if it's still under warranty have them repair it or get a refund.

Thank You,it is the best solution,i did it about nine months after i bought it(for another problem),but it's not under warranty any more,in Sony they told me to send console and to expect app.$300-350 charge,so i'm not sure it's worth it,thanks anyway.

i have another solution might work

turn on main switch of ps3
then leave in standy
hold I/O button till it turns on then back to standby mode
then turn on again and hold button till it beeps twice
then connect conrtoller
then choosee RESTORE FILE SYSTEM!!!!!!!!! OR DATA WILLL BE ERASED
then wait

Thank You for this advice,i tried this before(first restored files,it didn't work,then erased all data),thanks anyway.
