PS3 annoying error.

Hi again Forum members,
My son tried to play his Rainbow Six Vegas 2 game yesterday and an error occurred and the screen went blank. It then decided to do an update, 2.53, but couldn't complete downloading, it got stuck on 7%. On restart an error 80030001 showed up and his messages in his inbox and saved Rainbow Six games were lost. Another message that came up after finishing a game was: hard drive being rebuilt. He can still play games OK and online play is not affected, but if he plays offline this error 80030001 keeps occuring and he cannot delete or save games now.
This morning I managed to successfully install update 2.53. Game play is OK as it was before but this error keeps popping up on the screen before the game starts and after the game starts, which is very annoying.
I had backed up all of his games on my flash drive, but for some reason you cannot backup Rainbow Six Vegas 2 saved games, it comes up with a message: copyrighted cannot save. Has anyone else found this?
The question is, can this problem be solved easily, this error 80030001 or is it a manufacturers defect. The PS3 is 6 months old.
