contents of sub folders not showing on ext hdd!

I have just bought an external 1TB HDD and hooked it up to my PS3 but it seems to be having issues seeing any files in sub folders. I have a Pictures folder, with sub folders of years, eg 2003, 2004 etc, it sees these, but none of the folders under that. when I look at the info on each top folder it seems to spend ages counting up the number of files and size. It does the same for video and music. Does the PS3 need to "sync" with the HDD first? Any suggestions?

Have you tried using the 'Display all' option?

(Pictures > Your HDD > Press Triangle > Choose Display All)
