PS3 Freeze Before Playing Music or System Update

My PS3 now freezes (sort of) right when I select System Update or any music file. It basically just won't let me move, but a loading reticle appears in the upper right corner and I can still access my controller menu. I don't actually get anywhere on the system update, not even to the screen that asks Internet or Storage Media. I always just have to force the Playstation to shut down. Any help would be appreciated, though this seems like a really rare issue. I've tried restoring default settings.

Is the console well ventilated?

I believe it's well ventilated, but that at least doesn't yield immediate results when it's brought out into the complete open and given a shot at it.

I've now tried restoring the entire PS3 system after a backup, and that hasn't worked for me either.

It's not kept in a dusty area is it?

If a reset didn't do the trick, the problem may be hardware related in which case your best option would be to contact Sony.

It's not especially dusty, and I kept it completely out of that area for several hours to try and help it, but no dice. I've called Sony and they're sending a box for me to send it back to them, because customer service had no clue.
