ps3 psu shot?

Hi,

i have a 60 gig ps3 and I usually leave it on for long periods of time like a few days at a time. well the other day i get home from work and it is on then I go play call of duty 4 and the ps3 is not on, so i press the power button and it goes on then the colors on the led went from green to yellow then to red then nothing.

now it wont even turn on at all. The warrenty on it is void cause i opened it when i first got it cause i wanted to play my backup ps2 games. So, do you think this could be a psu problem or motherboard fried? Any input at all on this would be greatly appreciated.

Justin

Hi Justin. Welcome to TSF.

I would say the same thing, either something got toasted or shorted but I don't think it was cause you left it on for hours.

I think Sony will still repair it for you but will require payment

well I heard that they wont even touch it if the seal has been broke. is there a way that i can tell if the psu is bad by looking at it?

Not without opening it. Even then I don't know if it'll be entirely obvious if the PSU's stuffed.

Call Sony up and see what they have to say. This, I think, will be the cheapest option for you.

Re: ps3 psu shot?

I called soney and they said that they wont take it cause it has been opened. So cant i just buy a new psu and put it in there? I have it opened up now and can see some brownish marks all over the circut board does that mean it is burnt out or is it supposed to be like that?

Apparently that's what it's meant to look like.

I don't know how easy it will be to replace the PSU. I've never heard of anyone doing it so I can't help you with that part. Sorry.

Hang around though, if someone else knows if it's possible, they'll let you know.

Is this the PSU board?

If so, could you copy and paste it into Paint or something and arrow where the brown marks are, or even better, take a photo and post that.

Re: ps3 psu shot?

yes that is the psu, thankyou. i dont have a camera but i found my voltage meter today and everything has voltage up to the second fuse. one side voltage the other nothing so the fuse is blown, I actually found a psu and ordered it so hopefully i will have it back next week. I just noticed that yours is different from mine do you have the 60 gig? so just out of curiosity, can i use any ps3 psu or does it have to come from a 60 gig model?
