Will playing a game disc that contains a scratches damage the PS2 laser?

Will playing a game disc that contains a lot of scratches on the disc, hurt or damage my PS2 laser?

The laser, no. But because it's scratched, it possibly won't have the same structural integrity as it once did and at high speeds, it can shatter.

If you're confident that the disk wont shatter, then feel free to use it
