What PS2 should I buy?

I am going to buy a PS2.

How many different versions are there? Slimline and something else?

Can it play DVD movies?

Can it read my DVD-RW discs which contain my personal mpeg files that I made?

Can I play online games against others for free?

Does the PS2 have ethernet port for my broadband modem?

Is there anything I should know before I buy one?

Thank you :)

Re: What PS2 should I buy?

I'll try to answer as best I can.

How many different versions are there? Slimline and something else? 2 as far as I know, the old fat boy and the new slimline. (From personal experience, I would recommend getting the fat boy as the slim ones seem to develop more problems.)

Can it play DVD movies? Yes

Can it read my DVD-RW discs which contain my personal mpeg files that I made? Not as far I know

Can I play online games against others for free? Most game, some do require a monthly payment though

Does the PS2 have ethernet port for my broadband modem? You will need a network adaptor for the PS2

Is there anything I should know before I buy one? Wouldn't recommend getting a 2nd hand one

Re: What PS2 should I buy?

On the used market there is the Slimline and the original size. The new market only has the Slimline.

Can it play DVD movies?
Yes. I also recommend getting the PS2 remote control.

Can it read my DVD-RW discs which contain my personal mpeg files that I made?
Yes, it will read them. Now, it will not play them.

Can I play online games against others for free?
That depends on the game. The PS2 does not have anything like Live so some games may require a fee for online play.

Does the PS2 have ethernet port for my broadband modem?
The new version of the Slimline has an Ethernet port. The older Slimline has Ethernet and a modem port.

Is there anything I should know before I buy one?
If you get one used be sure you can test it before you buy it.

Just bought a new slimline PS2 today.

You are wrong about some things....

1. The old PS2 (fat boy) doesn't have network support. But the slimline does, and I simply plugin in my ethernet cable from my broadband modem.

2. It plays my DVD-RW out of the box.

3. I dont need a network adaptor for the PS2 at all. My slimline comes with one built in already.

Re: What PS2 should I buy?

I should have said I was basing my replies on the fat boy.

1 and 3. For network support on the fat boy, you needed the network interface. (I never connected mine up though, so I could be totally off on this)
2. I'm surprised. Are they just data disks, or burnt as media disks? Cause my PS3 has issues reading data disks sometimes...

Sorry if I lead you astray. I think ebackhus covered me though
