Dreamcast won't play discs

When trying to load any game, my dreamcast does one of two things. In the first scenario, the dreamcast simply does not load the game, claiming that it "cannot read the disc." The system won't load anything but the main menu, and repeatedly makes noises as if it's trying to spin the disc, but stops. When I open the tray, I see that the disc is not spinning. The second scenario, the game starts, but very shortly after starting, cuts to the menu, and the same problem occurs. In this second scenario, I hear the disc stop spinning around the time the game cuts to menu. Basically, the system won't read discs. I know the discs function because I've used them both in the past, and recently at other peoples' houses. Therefore, my system has an issue. Please help!

Re: Dreamcast won't play discs

Sounds like a firmware issue to me fellas. Since there is no more tech support for those consoles, might as well find one online or support your local buy/sell/trade game store.

Re: Dreamcast won't play discs

That's funny. our local buy/sell/trade store is gamestop. I can count on one finger the number of people there that can walk someone through a XBox Live account set up, let alone answer an issue with a game system firmware. (I used to work there.) LOL

Regardless, I figured mine was crapped out anyway, so I took it all apart, cleaned it, and now it works fine me cleaning it may or may not have had ANYTHING to do with it, but it works!

just wondering, how DO you fix a firmware issue anyway? do you have to hook it up to a dial-up connection and hack it that way?
