360 - Xp Pc

Trying to get my pc and xbox 360 to talk so they can share files. they are both using static addresses and are on a belkin f5d7230 router which is running the latest firmware

I cant ping the 360 from the pc, and they cant see each other when i try to share something. UPNP is on, and the 360 works fine on xbox live through the router.

I'm gonna get a crossover cable and make sure i can ping when using that instead, but im sure thats gonna work.

what could be going on?

Re: 360 - Xp Pc

You need to install the Zune software (Windows 2000, XP) or install the Media Center Extender (Windows Media Center 2005) to get them talking. Vista will "see" the 360 on the network and launch Media Center to sync up with it.

Re: 360 - Xp Pc

Thanks for the reply. I'm using windows media player 11, which can be used in the same way as zune apparently (http://www.xbox.com/en-GB/pcsetup/xpsp2.htm) and has a file sharing option. i can try zune if i get to a point where i can ping the 360. i am getting a crossover today to see if i can ping without the router

Re: 360 - Xp Pc

You'll need both the Zune software and a router to share media, unfortunately.

Re: 360 - Xp Pc

The router will give it an IP address which will allow it to be pinged. The Zune software allows the 360 to stream data from the PC it's running on.

Re: 360 - Xp Pc

The 360 gets an IP address fine. its on 192.168.2.3 and my PC is on 192.168.2.4. The subnet mask, gateway and DNS settings are all identical but i cant ping the damn thing. Same problem using zune. zune has the same options as wmp11 for sharing media to an xbox360.

im not too worried about which media program i'm using at the moment, cos i know it wont work unless i can ping it. so... it has to be a problem or limitation of my router i guess. maybe i will speak to belkin, they must have come across this if that is the case.

Thanks very much for your help

Re: 360 - Xp Pc

Can the 360 see your PC? Go to the System blade and click on Computers. It will show you what computers it can talk to and allow you to choose one to work with. The Zune software on your computer works in the background so you don't need to actively run it to connect. Once it's connected you can jump back to the Media blade and click on Music. It can also play WMV video for you.
