My Gamecube cannot play "games"

I was playing my gamecube when it froze. Has happened before. So I restarted it like normal. Then it shows the gamecube logo then goes black. I wait a couple minutes, still black. Scratched disk? No, tried another disk same thing. Scratched lends? No, I started the Gamecube with no disk and then inserted it. Went to the gameplay screen and it read the disk fine. Now I was stumped. I remembered I had a demo disk from when I bought a game. I put that in. Loaded right up to the main menu. I got to select a Movie on the disk. The movie worked fine. Went back to the main menu and selected a game demo. Went to the black screen again. I unpluged everything except for the controler and the problem continued. I called tech support and they said to send it in. I will either do that or buy one from my friend. Anyone know what is wrong? So I can know what went wrong to prevent it in the future.
