PS2 problems

I got a PS2 from a friend that was giving him disc read errors. So I thought I might as well try to fix it for myself. When I started working on it, the disc would start spinning and then just stop and it wouldn't load. So I tried repositioning the laser.

By repositioning the laser I got it to a point where the disc would continually spin, but still would not load. I tried cleaning the laser and I used rubbing alcohol and Q-tips. I cleaned both the bottom and the top one. Now no matter where the laser is it will start spinning and spins fine for a few seconds then it stops.. And gives me DRE in the browser.

Did I mess up the laser? Was it already broken? Is there anything I can try?

Thanks for any help

Re: PS2 problems

Is this one of the big PS2s? Many had problems where a misalignment of the cogs controlling the laser sled led to DREs. The good news is that you can easily fix this in most cases.

Re: PS2 problems

its probably just not aligned correctly yet. keep working at it and see if you can get it to load.
