PS2 Digital Out problem using optical cable

My PS2 is connected to my stereo through Digital Out optical cable. Today I started noticing hic ups, meaning every now and then the audio would pause until eventually it stopped working. When the cable is connected to the PS2 the cable illuminates read on the opposite end. When connecting the cable to different optical input on the stereo no sound comes out. I don't have a dvd with optical output to test the stereo. Audio comes out of the PS2 when using analog red and white cables.

Re: PS2 Digital Out help

Yes, using the RCA red & white cables I do get audio, it's what I have been using for now. I really don't mind this for gaming, since PS2 doesn't have Dolby Digital for games, however I did use my PS2 as a DVD player and it would be nice if this could be fixed. Unfortunately I don't have another DVD or device with audio out, nor an additional stereo system with optical input to test this. Has this ever happened before? I searched in google about this and only one other person has had the problem.

Re: PS2 Digital Out help

I use the optical outputs for everything I have. An important thing is to make sure there are no sharp bends in the cable, just gradual curves. Tight bends can stop the signal from transmitting properly.

I will try a new cable, it looks like they are really cheap on ebay.

Re: PS2 Digital Out help

Beware of ones that are TOO cheap, for all we know they could have fishing line inside! I suggest that you find the middle ground on cost. I avoid the uber cheapo brands and also avoid the super expensive ones. One brand that both my dad and I have come to like with our equipment is Acoustic Research. They're not overly expensive but provide excellent quality.
