Hi all, I have a shared folder with approx 1,000 files and most people can have access to these files. However I'm trying to make it so that one particular file isn't even visible to most people.
I have added a user into the security section of the file and DENIED everything. However they can still happily see this file when they navigate to it.
I have checked effective permissions for this user and nothing is ticked. Could someone help me please. OS is 2008 Standard
I have now taken a different route and removed all user accounts and groups from this single file. Now only SYSTEM, Administrators and 2 groups (of which this user is not a member) have permission and yet the user can still see the file!
Even though the file is visible to the user, I can see that they cannot open or copy the file. This is enough for me as it is basically useless to the user.
It would have been nice to hide the file but if that isn't possible using Windows Server then so be it. Would be nice if someone could confirm my theory though
You can't really "hide" a file from select people. The best option is to create another folder and share that to select people. You can even make the share hidden. Example would be a folder called PUBLIC for everyone and then a folder called ADMIN for specific people. When you share the folder ADMIN you can add a $ after the name and nobody will see it, they'll have to know it exists. You'd map it as \\computername\admin$ .
that's the trick.
Create a folder.
Stop inheritance.
Make a group that excludes everyone but this user and solely assign this group to the folder at user level.
Assign your admin group to admin the folder.
