I am loading a Windows XP on my Windows 98 opperating system to get better virus protection support and Microsoft support of anykind. I keep getting an error message that it failed to continue the uploading E;/1386/mfc42.dll to C/windows/setup/mfc42.dll. Error message 536FF5Ch. What is the reason for failing to continue with the upgrade to XP with service pack 3?

Just a quick note:

If you already have, or can make, backup disks of your important data - one workaround would be to try a "clean" install of Windows XP, rather than trying to run an upgrade install. A "clean" install is (I imagine you might know this well already) when Windows is installed onto a blank drive.

You might have a lot less trouble with a clean install.

Best of luck
