Sudden Black Screen
Hey guys, I'm kind of new here so I apologize if I come off as a little ignorant, but I'm having a problem that I have never really experienced before. Back in 2009, I bought a Gateway FX 7805u laptop from Best Buy. It has run perfectly until a few weeks ago.
Suddenly, most often during games, the screen will turn itself off and there will be a loud buzz coming from my speakers. During this time, I also lose all keyboard control so I can't even turn off the sound.
It seems to happen more while the games are run in fullscreen. GPU temperatures are usually between 130-170F during the games. I've run memtest numerous times and found no errors. I took it back to Best Buy (ha) hoping that they would be able to shed some light on the situation, but they just wrote it off and said everything was fine.
Running Win7 ultimate 64bit
Everything else in the computer is stock:
4GB ram
9800M GTS GPU
Intel Duo Core 2 CPU
Please help =(

Re: Sudden Black Screen
Hello and welcome to TSF
we need all the laptop's temperatures (CPU, motherboard and GPU)
download HWmonitor from my sig and use it to measure the temps during a game, keep playing for about 15 mins and then post the temps here

Re: Sudden Black Screen
I don't have access to that site you shared your photo on. I would recommend either posting your temps in text, or sharing the photo in the thread.

Re: Sudden Black Screen
The image is in the attachment.
Where these taken while gaming or just on the desktop?
The CPU is a tad warm.
Have you blown the dust/debris out of the heatsink lately?

The images were taken while playing a game. I have the laptop set to where the GPU and CPU vents are both hanging off the desk so that airflow is optimal. I have cleaned the computer numerous times. Shortly after recording the video, I cleaned the heatsink and fans out and the computer black screened later that day.

Re: Sudden Black Screen
There were a lot of failures with the 8m and 9m series GPU's from 08 and 09, there was a lot on the web about then but, getting harder to find now here0's a couple.
Series: Dell and HP balk at replacing bad Nvidia chip « Windows Secrets
Nvidia's GPU Material Defect Cost $475.9 Million
These mostly effected the 8400m and 8600m chips but the 9400m and 9600m chips are failing the same way just taking a long period of time to fail.

Re: Sudden Black Screen
Is it still under warranty from either?
Aside from replacing the motherboard there's not much else you can do, even then it'll be a refurb board and re-failure rates are high.
