Why would it be that I cannot release an IP address and renew it? When I use winipcfg, it is not working even though the NIC and router recognize a connection. The OS is WinME. thanks

Try this..................:D

Start
Settings
Control Panel
Network
Highlight TCP/IP for your NIC
Properties
Uncheck Detect Connection To Network Media
Reboot

See if that does anything for you.

So, I tried unchecking the "Detect Connection to Network Media" and still nothing. Do you have any other ideas? If so I would love to hear them. Thanks

Are you sure you're using DHCP? You could have a statc address - one you manually entered.

Also, if you release and renew, it might do it and give you back the exact same IP address.

When you release, does the IP address go away? Become zeros?

I am sure I am using DHCP. At one time I believe a static address was entered on that particular computer but only in error, and has since been removed.
When I try to release the ip nothing happens. I know that when it releases it goes to zeros, but it is not doing that so therefor is not renewing anything new. Both of the other computers do everything just fine. Is there something different to be done on Windows ME that on Windows 98? Thanks

Hmm. Not that I'm aware of. At this point, I would suggest in removing TCP/IP from your network properties and reinstall it. Make sure you have your Windows CAB files handy - either on CD or HD.

At one point there was an update to M$ Winsock. Might search for the problem on M$ Knowledge Base.
