Word 2003 freezes when opening files

A few days ago Word 2003 started freezing when I was using the "save as" option to save files.

Now it's degraded to the point where it freezes when I try to open files as well. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling Office. (I used Iobit's advanced uninstaller the second time to completely remove all files.)

I've deleted normal.dot and edited the registry to remove the word 2003 files. It's still not working.

Any ideas before I'm forced to just reformat my entire computer and start over?

Thanks!

Mary Lou

I found the solution by doing some more searching and am sharing it here in case it helps anyone else.

The problem was in my drop down file and was due to some phantom network drives. These were apparently created because my printer was turned off when I tried to print some documents. I went to my computer in windows explorer, did a right click to disconnect network drive. I disconnected all of the phantom drives I found there (w, x, y and z), then went back into word and now it's working fine.
