[SOLVED] certain web pages/sites wont open
recently started having some problems, certain web pages/sites wont open first noticed when I tried accessing wikipedia, I get the same page that is displayed when there is no internet access "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage" and the diagnose connection button. some of the speed test sites wont load either, and top10.com returns a latency test error "latency test returned an error whist trying to read the latency file"
It does not appear to be my router or connection, (it was just that I noticed the problem the day after the engineer visited to upgrade my virgin media to 50mb) as I have accessed wikipedia with my laptop. I have also noticed that vuze cannot search, get a message saying "sorry there was a problem loading this page please check your internet connection"
I have reset restored advanced settings, and reset internet explorers settings, I have cleared all cookies history and tempory internet files (although there are five folders and three files that wont delete)
I have checked my hosts file and that appears ok only has the entry "127.0.0.1 local host"
I have run ccleaner, superantispyware and malaware
I have tried google chrome and firefox these dont load wikipedia either
any advice would be much appreciated

Re: certain web pages/sites wont open
If you have not already power cycled your router please do so now, simply pull the power cord to the router leaving it disconnected for at least 30 seconds then plug it back in and try again.

Hi eddie robinson,
Try flushing the DNS and see if that helps. Open up the command prompt and type in "ipconfig /flushdns" without the quotes. See if this helps resolve your computer issue. Hope everything works out well for you.

Re: certain web pages/sites wont open
eddie robinson: Because the problem started immediately after the upgrade, I'd call VM and tell them exactly that. If they can't fix it remotely, perhaps the engineer needs to come back.

Re: certain web pages/sites wont open
hi db cooper:
I flushed the dns to try and see if that was the problem a couple of days ago, I tried flushing the dns again today, and get the message "the requested operation requires elevation"
hi corday:
I dont know if virgin media will do anything, as I can access the sites with my laptop, through the hub although the dont know that, so I might give them a ring and see what they say. if they send out an engineer and theres no line fault I'll on doubt get a bill though

Re: certain web pages/sites wont open
I love the new outsourcing. The "director" gets a commission for the referral and shirks all responsibility. Some of the largest corporations now do this. Anyway, before proceeding further, go to this Microsoft site: How to reinstall or repair Internet Explorer in Windows 7, Windows Vista, and Windows XP

Re: certain web pages/sites wont open
Check if you are using any Proxy Settings, here's how to remove it.
Clear your browser's cache. Here's a guide.
Then this:
How do I reset the hosts file back to the default?

Re: certain web pages/sites wont open
hi go the power
all the thing you have mentioned have been done before, ive done them again still without any successs, I fear I may have to format and reinstall windows to cure my problem, which then creates another problem, for I dont have a vista disk, and I dont know what I did with the info that came with the pc for reinstalling

Re: certain web pages/sites wont open
hi corday,
folowed the link for reinstalling ie8, but as I have a newer version than whats on the link to download, i cant complete that option. I also cant upgrade to ie9 as it keeps failing and rolling back the changes. this has been on automatic updates for a few weeks, wonder if this has been part of my problem

Re: certain web pages/sites wont open
Click Here to download IEdll.zip. Save it to your desktop.
Right click on IEdll.zip click on Extract all.
Go to the extracted files and double click on IEdll.bat
Follow the prompts.
It will tell you when it is done.
When finished please restart your computer.
