Ie7 Freezing In Vista Home Premium

I have a dell xps 410 with vista hoe premium. IE7 was working fine till last feb.
In feb I had problems with adware/spyware which were resolved.
Also I downloaded and installed the microsoft security updates. Since then IE7 is freezing up for no obvious reason-the machine doenst respond even to shutdown. I have to swtich off the power physically. Occassionally IE seems to work fine as is the case now.
Pls help.

Can you run IE with no add-ons fine?

Click Start, All programs, Accessories, System tools and click on Internet Explore (No Addons)

WHEN i HAVE THE PROBLEM WITH ie i AM NOT ABLE TO OPEN THE OTHER BROWSERS.
aSLO WHAT NOTICE IS THAT WHEN THE PROBLEM OCCOR THE IE is remaining/running under processes which simply refuses to END and a SHUTDOWN is also not working.
