Strange Problems

Today, I encountered a number of strange problems with my computer (running 32-bit Vista home basic) that I've never encounter before. I assume they're all related:
-The computer does not shut down properly. It stays in the "Logging Off" screen forever.
-I can't open Firefox.
-When I open Ad-Aware, it gets stuck in the loading screen.
-When I open the Task Manager, it does not appear, but its icon does appear in the lower right-hand side of the taskbar. The icon is not interactive.

Everything else I've tried seems to be running normally. I ran a scan with MalwareBytes, but didn't find anything. Fortunately, I backed everything up recently.

I can't think of anything risky I've done in the last few days, and in fact did not have an internet connection until a few days ago. I did encounter Antivirus Vista 2010 a few weeks ago, but MalwareBytes seemed to have removed it.

I ran a scan with DDS, but it only created one file. GMER blue-screened when I tried to run it.

Here's the result of the DDS scan:

DDS (Ver_09-12-01.01) - NTFSx86

Re: Strange Problems

Hello DNS,

Would you please post the log from Malwarebytes when you ran it? If you launch the tool and click on the Logs tab, you should find it listed there.

Make sure you disable your onboard Anti Virus/Firewall programs and try to run gmer again. If it still blue screens, please try to run it from Safe Mode.

Thank you. :)

Is there another log? I'm most interested in a log created during this time frame:

I did encounter Antivirus Vista 2010 a few weeks ago, but MalwareBytes seemed to have removed it.

Re: Strange Problems

I should add two more things:
-I first tried to fix this problem with System Restore before coming here. This did nothing.
-For the past month or so, my computer seems to have spent a much higher percentage of its time accessing the hard drive. This may not be related, since I noticed this long before any of the other problems manifested themselves.

Re: Strange Problems

GMER wouldn't let me save it.

Strangely, when I started up my computer tonight, the problems appear to be gone. I'll try GMER again tonight and see if anything changes.

If you don't have a good idea of what I should do next, I can probably deal with this on my own from here. The problems don't seem to be too critical.

Re: Strange Problems

I have a well layed out plan of action of what needs to be done, but for the safety of your data and system, I would feel better if I knew ahead of time if there were any rootkits on the system.
