How to disable your security applications

[amateur]

Note: Those which do not have the instructions for re-enabling are usually re-enabled by a reboot.

Once the scans are completed, be sure to Turn On "Real-Time Scanning".


Adaware's AdWatch

Ad-Watch:

• Right-click on the Ad-Watch icon in the system tray
• Select "Restore Ad-Watch"
• At the bottom of the screen you will see 2 options -- Active and Automatic.
• Uncheck both options (red X).
• Since you will likely be doing several shutdown/restarts, under Tools & Preferences > Options > Activity > Deselect "Load Ad-Watch at Windows startup"

Note: When Ad-Watch is re-enabled, it is vital that you accept any changes that may be alerted by Ad-Watch.

AdWatch (versions from 2007 onwards)

1. Right click on the Ad-Watch icon in the system tray.
2. Select Goto Settings.
3. Click on Status on the left.
4. On your right hand side, click once on each of the section to turn the green tick into a red cross.
5. Click on RegShield on the left.
6. On your right hand side, click once on each of the section to turn the green tick into a red cross.
7. Click on Settings on the left.
8. Click once on Load Ad-Watch at startup to turn the green tick into a red cross.
9. Minimize Ad-Watch.
10. Right click on the Ad-Watch icon again and select Close Ad-Watch.
11. You will be prompted if you want to shut down Ad-Watch. Click Yes.
12. Restart your computer for the changes to take effect.

Re-enable Lavasoft AdWatch:

1. Open Ad-Watch.
2. Click on Status on the left.
3. On your right hand side, click once on each of the section to turn the red cross into a green tick.
4. Click on RegShield on the left.
5. On your right hand side, click once on each of the section to turn the red cross into a green tick.
6. Select Settings on the left.
7. Click once on Load Ad-Watch at startup to turn the red cross into a green tick.
8. Close the Ad-Watch window. Ad-Watch will minimize to your system tray (near the clock).
9. Restart your computer for the changes to take effect.

Anniversary Edition Ad-Watch

Ad-Watch in Ad-Aware Anniversary Edition

1. Start Ad-Aware
2. Click the Ad-Watch tab
3. Click the Settings button
4. Ensure all highlighted options bellow are unchecked:
   
   Under the General tab
   • Processes Protection
5. OK your way out, and close the main Ad-Aware window.
6. Shut down Ad-Aware and Ad-Watch Live! by right clicking on the system tray icon, and selecting Exit Ad-Aware.
7. OK the change.

Ad-Watch in Ad-Aware Anniversary Edition Pro

1. Start Ad-Aware
2. Click the Ad-Watch tab
3. Click the Settings button
4. Ensure all highlighted options bellow are unchecked:
   
   Under the General tab
   • Processes Protection
   • Registry Protection
   • Network Protection
   Under the Detection Layers tab:
   • Spyware heuristics
   • AntiVirus engine
5. OK your way out, and close the main Ad-Aware window.
6. Shut down Ad-Aware and Ad-Watch Live! by right clicking on the system tray icon, and selecting Exit Ad-Aware.
7. OK the change.

Anniversary Edition Combined Free and Pro, might be easiest to use

1. Start Ad-Aware
2. Click the Ad-Watch tab
3. Click the Settings button
4. Ensure all highlighted options bellow are unchecked:(some settings may be used or changed only in the Pro version)
   
   Under the General tab
   • Processes Protection
   • Registry Protection
   • Network Protection
   Under the Detection Layers tab:
   • Spyware heuristics
   • AntiVirus engine
5. OK your way out, and close the main Ad-Aware window.
6. Shut down Ad-Aware and Ad-Watch Live! by right clicking on the system tray icon, and selecting Exit Ad-Aware.
7. OK the change.

a-squared Anti-Malware 4.0

1. Right click on a-squared Anti-Malware icon near the clock (it's a square with the number 2 on it) and select Security Center.
2. Under Background Guard, click once on disable next to OnExecution Scan enabled to disable it. It should now show OnExecution Scan disabled.
3. Click once on disable next to Malware-IDS enabled to disable it. It should now show Malware-IDS disabled.
4. Select Configuration on the left.
5. Select the General Settings tab. Under Background Guard settings, uncheck (untick) Enable background guard on system start box.
6. Close a-squared Anti-Malware.
7. Right click on a-squared Anti-Malware icon again and select Exit Background Guard.
8. You will be prompted to enter in a code. Enter in the code and click OK.

Re-enable a-squared Anti-Malware 4.0

1. Click on Start > All Programs > a-squared Anti-Malware > a-squared Anti-Malware.
2. On the left, click on Security Status.
3. Under Background Guard, click once on enable next to OnExecution Scan disabled to enable it. It should now show OnExecution Scan enabled.
4. Click once on enable next to Malware-IDS disabled to enable it. It should now show Malware-IDS enable.
5. Select Configuration on the left.
6. Select the General Settings tab. Under Background Guard settings, check (tick) Enable background guard on system start box.
7. Close a-squared Anti-Malware.

a-squared Anti-Malware (versions prior to v4)

1. Click on Start > All Programs > a-squared Anti-Malware > a-squared Anti-Malware.
2. On the left, click on Security Status.
3. Under Background Guard, click once on enable next to OnExecution Scan disabled to enable it. It should now show OnExecution Scan enabled.
4. Click once on enable next to Malware-IDS enabled to enable it. It should now show Malware-IDS disabled.
5. On the left, click on Background Guard.

• Right Click on the Avast icon in the system tray
• Click on Program Settings...
• Click on Troubleshooting
• Place a tick next to Disable avast! self-defense module
• Click OK
• At the prompt that appears, click Yes
• Right Click on the Avast icon in the system tray and click Stop On-Access protection
• At the prompt that appears, click Yes

AVG 7
Please open the AVG7 Control Center.

• Double-click on the "AVG Resident Shield" component.
• Deselect the "Turn on AVG Resident Shield" checkmark and save the setting.
• When you need to enable the AVG Resident Shield, reopen the AVG Control Center.
• Double-click on the "AVG Resident Shield" component, select the "Turn on AVG Resident Shield" checkmark and save the setting.

AVG 8
Please open the AVG 8 Control Center, by right clicking on the AVG 8 icon on task bar.

• Click on Tools.
• Select Advanced.
• In the left hand pane, scroll down to "Resident Shield".
• In the main pane, deselect the option to "Enable Resident Shield."
• To re-enable AVG 8, please select "Enable Resident Shield" again.

AVG 8.5
Please open the AVG 8.5 Control Center, by right clicking on the AVG icon on task bar.

• Click on Open AVG Interface.
• Double click on Resident Shield
• Deselect the option to "Enable Resident Shield."
• Save changes, and exit the application.
• To re-enable AVG 8.5, please select "Enable Resident Shield" again.

AVG 9.0
Resident Shield:

• Open AVG User Interface.
• Double-click on the Resident Shield.
• Un-tick the option Resident Shield active.
• Save the changes.

Reverse to re-enable.

AVG 2011
Please open the AVG 2011 Control Center, by right clicking on the AVG icon on task bar.

• Click on Open AVG User Interface.
• On the Menu Bar, click on Tools
• Click Advanced Settings
• In the new screen which opens, scroll down to Temporarily disable AVG protection. Click on it to highlight it.
• In the right hand pane, tick the box for Temporarily disable AVG protection
• Click Apply
• In the next screen which opens, select 15 minutes from the drop down menu, then click the Disable real time protection button.
• Click OK
  

Re-enable:
Tick Enable on the main GUI interface to Re-enable. You may also need to click Fix (enable becomes Fix if all components do not start)

Avira's Antivir

Please navigate to the system tray on the bottom right hand corner and look for an open white umbrella on red background.

• right click it-> untick the option AntiVir Guard enable.
• You should now see a closed, white umbrella on a red background.

You successfully disabled the AntiVir Guard.

Bit Defender

• Open the Bitdefender window.
• Click the Settings button in the upper toolbar.
• Click Antivirus on the left-side menu and then the Shield tab.
• Click the switch to turn off on-access scanning.

Reverse to re-enable

Bullguard Antivirus and Firewall:

• Disable BullGuard's firewall and antivirus from BullGuard's Console.
• Double-click the BullGuard icon in your system tray (bottom right corner, just next to the clock).
• Click on Antivirus sectionon the left pane
• Click on Protection tab > Disable Antivirus option (click Turn it off)
• Disable the BullGuard Click on the the Firewall section
• Click on Overview tab > Disable Firewall option. (click Turn it off)

Exit the Bullguard console.

Reverse to re-enable

CA Antivirus 2009

1. Right click on CA Antivirus icon near the clock (a shield).
2. Click on CA Anti-Virus > Snooze Anti-Virus Protection.
3. When prompted, enter in 30 and click on Snooze.

CounterSpy:

• Right click the CounterSpy icon in the systray
• Mouse over Active Protection
• Click Disable Active Protection (icon should turn orange indicating AP is disabled)
• If you are asked for how long choose "Until I enable it myself" (this is needed so the disabled setting survives the reboot)

Reverse to re-enable.

ESET

ESET NOD32 Antivirus V4

• Double click on the system tray icon on the bottom right hand corner.
• Select Disable real-time file system protection.
• A popup will ask "Are you sure you want to disable...protection?"
• Click "Yes" to disable the Antivirus guard.

ESET Smart Security:

• Double click on the system tray icon to open the main application window.
• Or via Start >> All Programs >> ESET >> ESET Smart Security.
  
  Next:
  
• Click on Setup >> Antivirus and antispyware >> Temporarily disable Antivirus and antispyware protection.
• When prompted to confirm temporarily disable select Yes.

Note: Protection will be automatically started after a system reboot.

F-PROT

Automatic file system protection

• Run F-PROT Antivirus.
• Click the Virus scanners menu.
• Under Virus scanners, select File system.
• In the File system window, clear the Enable automatic file protection check box to disable the service.
• Click Save.

Internet Explorer protection

• Run F-PROT Antivirus.
• Click the Virus scanners menu.
• Under Virus scanners, select Internet/E-mail.
• In the Internet/E-mail window, clear the Enable Internet Explorer protection check box to disable the service and then click Save.

Re-enable F-PROT:

To enable the automatic scanners, you may either enable their service in the System status menu or the Virus scanners menu.
In the System status menu - most convenient way:

When the automatic scanners are disabled, a red graphic symbol is displayed in the System status menu. Click on each automatic scanners to enable their service. Do the following:

• Run F-PROT Antivirus and the System status menu opens.
• From this window, click on "Complete file system protection", "Outlook e-mail protection", and "Internet Explorer protection".

In the Virus scanners menu

• Run F-PROT Antivirus.
• Click the Virus scanners menu. From this window, click on the Enable button for "Complete file system protection", "Outlook e-mail protection" and "Internet Explorer protection".

Kaspersky AntiVirus 2009

• Right click on Kaspersky icon near the clock and select Pause protection....
• Select 30 minutes next to Resume protection in.
• Then click on the Resume protection in link.
• You will receive a warning that Kaspersky Antivirus is disabled.

Malwarebytes' Real Time Protection (Registered version only)

• Right-click on the MBAM icon in the System Tray and uncheck "Enable Protection".
• When asked, "Are you sure you want to disable the MBAM Protection Module?", click Yes.
• Right-click on the MBAM icon again and then uncheck "Start with Windows".
• The Protection Module is now disabled and will not restart.

Reverse to re-enable.

McAfee:

• Please open McAfee Security Centre
• Under Common Tasks click on Home
• Click Computer Files
• Click Configure
• Make sure the following are disabled by ticking the "Off" button.

  Virus protection
  Spyware protection
  System Guards Protection
  Script Scanning Protection (you may have to scroll down to see it)

• Next, select never for "When to re-enable real time scanning"
• and click OK.

McAfee Total Protection

• Right click the McAfee system tray icon.
• Select "Change Settings", then "Real-time Scanning"
• In the next dialog box which appears, where it says "Real-Time Scanning: On" click the button marked "Turn Off".
• Select Never as the length of time,
• Click Turn Off.

Reverse to re-enable


McAfee Internet Security Suite Firewall

• On the Windows taskbar, next to the clock, double-click the McAfee (M) icon.
  Note: If you are using Windows 7 and don't see the McAfee icon next to the clock, click the arrow next to the clock to reveal hidden icons.
• In Advanced Menu, click the Configure tab.
  Note: If you are unable to see the Configure tab, click the Advanced Menu link, and then click the Configure tab.
• In the Configure pane, click the Internet & Network link.
• In the Internet & Network Configuration pane, open the Firewall protection is enabled link by clicking it.
• Click the Off option.
• In the confirmation dialog box, open the Select when to re-enable firewall drop-down menu by clicking it.
• Choose Never, and then click OK.
• Click Close when prompted Your computer is not fully protected. .

• Right click on the system tray icon, and select "Open"
• Click on the "Settings" tab
• On the left side of the screen, click on "Real-time protection"
• Uncheck "Turn on Real-time protection"
• Click on "Save Changes"

Norton Antivirus Corporate Edition

Please refer to the instructions provided in the Norton AntiVirus Corporate Edition User's Guide under the section Turning File System System Protection off temporarily.



Norton Internet Security 2010:

• Right click on the Norton icon on your Taskbar
• Choose Disable Antivirus Auto-Protect
• You will then be presented with a dialog asking you how long you want to disable the real-time protection.
• Choose the desired time (30 minutes should be sufficient)

Reverse to re-enable.



Norton Script Blocking

• Open Norton Antivirus/Norton SystemWorks/Norton Internet Security Suite.
• Click on Options. If you see a menu, click on Norton Antivirus.
• On your left hand side, click on Script Blocking.
• On your right hand side, uncheck (untick) this box - uncheck Enable Script Blocking (recommended).
• Click OK to save the settings.

Norton 360

• Right click the Norton icon on your Windows application tray.
• View the Norton 360 Control Panel that displays. You will see the Firewall enabled and Auto Protect enabled menu options checked.
• Un-check the options for the Firewall and Autoprotect to disable Norton.
• You will then be asked to select a time-frame for disabling the automatic protective services
• You will get a new dialog box with five options: 15 minutes, 1 hour, 5 hours, Until system restart, Permanently.
• Choose 5 hours. If you choose forever, you will need to manually enable Norton 360 protective services at a future time.

Norton Firewall

• Right click on Norton the icon in the systray
• Click open the window of tasks and settings
• Click Change advanced settings
• Click Firewall
• On the left side of the window parameters, perform the following operation
• Select Off
• Then click Apply
• A window opens, allowing you to choose how long the firewall must be disabled
• Choose the time and click OK. Then click Close

Reverse to re-enable.

Symantec Endpoint Protection

• Open Symantec Endpoint Protection and then click Change settings from the left menu bar.
• Click Configure Settings next to Antivirus and Antispyware Protection. Click the File System Auto-Protect tab and uncheck the box labeled Enable File System Auto-Protect. Click OK.
• Click Configure Settings next to Proactive Threat Protection. Uncheck the boxes labeled Scan for trojans and worms and Scan for keyloggers. Click OK.

Re-enable Symantec Endpoint Protection:

• Open Symantec Endpoint Protection and then click Change settings from the left menu bar.
• Click Configure Settings next to Antivirus and Antispyware Protection. Click the File System Auto-Protect tab and check the box labeled Enable File System Auto-Protect. Click OK.
• Click Configure Settings next to Proactive Threat Protection. Check the boxes labeled Scan for trojans and worms and Scan for keyloggers. Click OK.

Online Armour

• Right click on Online Armour icon near the clock (icon looks like a shield).
• If you see a tick next to Program Guard, click once on Program Guard to remove this tick.
• You will be prompted. Click Yes.
• Right click on Online Armour icon again and select Deactivate HIPS features.
• You will be prompted. Click Yes.
• There will be another prompt to restart your computer. Click Yes to restart.

Panda Antivirus

Though an icon for Panda Antivirus will always be present in your computer's system tray, you cannot disable Panda Antivirus protection through this icon. Instead, you're going to have to load the Windows Task Manager and manually force Panda Antivirus to close if you want to disable it at any time.

• Right-click on the long, horizontal bar that holds your "Start" menu icon, i.e. taskbar.
• Click "Start Task Manager."
• Click the "Processes" tab.
• Look under the "Description" column for the file that represents Panda Antivirus. Once located, click on it.
• Click the "End Task" button. Click "End Task" again in the new window that appears. This will disable Panda Antivirus on your computer, until you restart.

Panda Cloud:

• Right click on the Panda icon in the system tray.
• Select "Stop antivirus."

PC Tools

PC Tools Antivirus

• Right click on PC Tools Antivirus icon near the clock (a trigram with a bug in the middle) and select Turn IntelliGuard OFF.
• You will be asked for how long you would want to disable the antivirus. Please select 30 minutes from the drop-down list and click on OK.

PC Tools Mamutu

• Right click on Mamutu's icon near the clock and select Security Status.
• Under Background Guard, click once on disable next to Malware-IDS enabled to disable it. It should now show Malware-IDS disabled.
• Select Malware IDS on the left.
• Select the General Settings tab.
• Uncheck (untick) Enable background on system startup box.
• Close Mamutu.
• Right click on Mamutu's icon again and select Exit.
• You'll be prompted to enter in a code. Please enter in the code and click OK.

Re-enable PC Tools Mamutu:

• Click on Start > All Programs > Mamutu > Mamutu.
• Under Background Guard, click once on enable next to Malware-IDS disabled to enable it. It should now show Malware-IDS enabled.
• Select Malware IDS on the left.
• Select the General Settings tab.
• Check (tick) Enable background on system startup box.
• Close Mamutu.

PC Tools Threatfire

• Right click on ThreatFire's icon near the clock (it's an orange flame) and select Suspend.
  
• When you see that the icon has turned from an orange flame to a blue icon with an orange strip in the middle, ThreatFire has been disabled temporarily.

Re-enable PC Tools Threatfire:

• Right click on ThreatFire's icon near the clock (blue icon with an orange strip in the middle) and select Suspend.
• It will turn into an orange flame if the re-enable process is performed successfully

• Click the Virus & Spy Protection tab.
• Next to Virus & Spy Protection, click the Change link.

Reverse to re-enable.

Sophos Anti-Virus On-Access Scan

• Right-click on the blue Sophos shield in your System Tray (near your clock in the lower right hand corner of your desktop), then click Open Sophos Anti-Virus.
• When the Sophos Anti-Virus window opens, click Configure Sophos Anti-Virus.
• Under the Configure section, click On-access scanning.
• Un-check the checkbox next to Enable on-access scanning for this computer.
• Click OK, then close the Sophos Anti-Virus window.

Re-Enable:

• Right-click on the blue Sophos shield in your System Tray (near your clock in the lower right hand corner of your desktop), then click Open Sophos Anti-Virus.
• When the Sophos Anti-Virus window opens, click Configure Sophos Anti-Virus.
• Under the Configure section, click On-access scanning.
• Check the checkbox next to Enable on-access scanning for this computer.
• Click OK, then close the Sophos Anti-Virus window.

Spybot's TeaTimer

Download ResetTeaTimer

• Save it to your Desktop.
• Double click ResetTeaTimer.exe to run it. This will only take a few seconds.

Note: This tool does not work with Windows XP Home Edition.

• Open Spybot Search & Destroy.
• In the Mode menu click "Advanced mode" if not already selected.
• Choose "Yes" at the Warning prompt.
• Expand the "Tools" menu.
• Click "Resident".
• Uncheck the "Resident "TeaTimer" (Protection of overall system settings) active." box.
• If TeaTimer gives you a warning that changes were made, click the "Allow Change" box when prompted.
• In the File menu click "Exit" to exit Spybot Search & Destroy.

Re-enable TeaTimer:

• Open Spybot Search & Destroy.
• In the Mode menu click "Advanced mode" if not already selected.
• Choose "Yes" at the Warning prompt.
• Expand the "Tools" menu.
• doubleClick "Resident".
• Check the "Resident "TeaTimer" (Protection of overall system settings) active." box.
• In the File menu click "Exit" to exit Spybot Search & Destroy.

SuperAntiSpyware:

• Open SUPERAntiSpyware
• Click on Preferences
• Click on Real-Time Protection tab
• Untick Real-Time protection
• Click on the Hi-Jack Protection tab
• Under Home Page Protection, uncheck "Protect Home Page from being changed. Changes can only be made here."
• Click on Close.
• Close SUPERAntiSpyware

Reverse to re-enable.

Trend Micro Internet Security 14

• Right click on Trend Micro Internet Security icon near the clock (a blue-white pill icon) and click once on Real-time Virus Protection.
  
• If successfully disabled, it will notify you about it and the pill icon will have a no entry sign on it.

Re-enable TM Internet Security 14:

• Right click on Trend Micro Internet Security icon near the clock (a blue-white pill icon with no entry sign) and click once on Real-time Virus Protection.
  
• If successfully enabled, it will notify you about it and it will change to a blue-white pill.

Trend Micro OfficeScan

• Right click on Trend Micro Antivirus icon near the clock.
• Select Unload OfficeScan.

Trend Micro PC-cillin Internet Security 2007

• Exit PC-cillin Internet Security from the system tray menu
• Close the PC-cillin Internet Security main console if it is open.
• Right-click the PC-cillin Internet Security icon near your computer's system clock.
• Click Exit from the menu.
• Click Yes when the confirmation message appears.

The PC-cillin Internet Security icon will disappear. Windows may display a popup message saying "Trend Micro PC-cillin Internet Security 2007 is turned off" and "Trend Micro PC-cillin Internet Security (Firewall) is turned off".

To turn PC-cillin Internet Security on again, click Start > Programs or All Programs > Internet Security 2007 > Main Console.

VIPRE:

• Right click icon in systray
• Mouse over "Active Protection"
• Click "disable Active Protection" (the VIPRE icon should turn grey and indicate AP is disabled when moused over)
• When asked for how long to disable it for tell it "until I enable it myself"

Webroot Antivirus

Anti-Virus Shield Disabling

• Click on the Options button on the left hand side of Webroot Anti-Virus
• Go to the Shields tab of the Options Menu
• Under the section labeled Anti-Virus Protection, uncheck the Protect against Viruses box.

Anti-Virus Sweep Disabling

• Click on the Options button on the left hand side of Webroot Anti-Virus
• On the Sweep tab, put the dot into Custom Sweep (please note you can only disable Anti-Virus Sweeps by using the Custom Sweep option)
• Under the section labeled Sweep Settings Summary, click the Change Settings link which is next to Custom Sweep Settings
• A Custom Sweep box will appear with various sections to click on. Click on the What To Sweep button on the left side of this Custom Sweep box.
• On this screen, uncheck Sweep for Viruses under the Viruses section.
• Click the OK button at the bottom of this screen and you will be returned to the Sweep tab. (Again please note that you can only disable Anti-Virus Sweeps by using the Custom Sweep Option which will now be selected)

SpySweeper:

• Launch Spy Sweeper
• Click the "Options" menu
• Select the "Programs" tab
• Click to remove the check mark from the "Load the program at Windows startup" option, and save your changes.
• Restrart. Spy Sweeper no longer launches when you start your computer.
  
  Reverse to re-enable.

Windows Defender

• Launch Windows Defender, right click on the System Tray icon, select Open.
• Click on Tools>Options.
• Scroll down and uncheck "Use real-time protection (recommended)".
• Scroll down further, and uncheck "Use Windows Defender"
• After you uncheck these, click on the Save button, approve the UAC prompt, and close Windows Defender.

Windows Live OneCare

• Right click system tray icon on main page
• Click Change Settings
• Click Viruses and Spyware Tab
• Tick "Off" radio button
• Click Apply and OK.

Also either have to disable Firewall, or approve one of CF's files, or RC won't install for XP otherwise.

Firewall Tab > Off > OK

Windows Security Essentials:

• Launch Windows Security Essentials
• Click on Settings tab
• Uncheck Turn on real- time protection (recommended)
• Click on Save changes

Reverse to re-enable.

WinPatrol

• Right Click the 'Scotty Dog' icon in the system tray
• Click Options
• At the bottom of the options page, Uncheck Automatically Run WinPatrol When Computer Starts
• Click the X in the upper right corner to end program.
• Right Click the 'Scotty Dog' icon in the system tray again.
• Click Exit Program
• Reboot your machine for the changes to take effect.

Re-enable WinPatrol:

1. Go to Start > All Programs > Winpatrol > Winpatrol.
2. Winpatrol will start, near the clock.
3. Right click on the Scotty Dog and select Options.... A window will open.
4. Select the Options tab.
5. Check (tick) this box: Automatically run Winpatrol when computer starts.
6. Close the Winpatrol window.

Zone Alarm

• Check the toolbar in the bottom right-hand corner of your screen and find the icon for Zone alarm.
• Right-click the Zone Alarm Icon.
• Scroll down and select "Shutdown Zone Alarm."
