I am assisting a friend. He opened an email and clicked a link. His antivirus warned him and he stopped, but now has several pop-ups trying to get him to purchase bogus antivirus software. These pop-ups will not go away, and he can not do anything on the computer. The only way to turn off the computer is by manually shutting it off at the button. Upon turning the computer back on, these pop-ups are still there.
He does not seem to be able to start the computer in safe mode. We can not get any reports for you.
Please advise what I need to do. At this point we can not remove any programs or do anything. The pop-ups are keeping him from accessing anything on the computer.
It is a Gateway, running Windows XP.
