Another Anti Vira AV hijack

Dear Tech Support Forum,
It appears that I have a problem similar to that of parabola50 posted 02-09-2011. Something called Anti Vira AV from antivirko.com has taken over my computer and will not allow anything to be opened or run. It directs me only to a site where I can purchase its antivirus or to a pornographic site. I am presently operating in Safe mode. I have attempted SmitfraudFix twice without any apparent change. I followed your preliminary instructions for consultation to the best of my ability. I apologies for any shortcomings. I feel better just having had the opportunity to tell you my problem.
Anxiously awaiting your response,
Frederick Fox

Hello Frederick, and welcome. :)

It will require more than 1 round to clean the system. Please stay with me until given the 'all clear' even if symptoms seem to abate.

Restart your computer and boot into Safe mode with Networking.

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2

* IMPORTANT- Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

====================================================

Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications as they will interfere with our tools and the removal. If you are unsure how to do this, please refer to our sticky topic How to disable your security applications

====================================================

Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Image

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply for further review.

Dear Ried,
Thank you for taking my case. I ran ComboFix as instructed. At the end the computer automatically rebooted into normal mode. I cannot find the C:\ComboFix.txt anywhere. Please let me know how I might recover that information. The symptoms of the original problem (AntiVira AV) have disappeared. I await your instructions.
Frederick

It sounds as though Combofix did not finish after the reboot. Please run a new scan with dds.scr and only post the dds.txt so I can see where we are now. :)

Good morning. :)

It appears ComboFix did not complete upon reboot. Ensure Sophos does not re-enable itself upon a reboot. If you can't find a way to configure it that way, then please uninstall it until we're through here.

After you've done the above, run ComboFix.exe again by double-clicking on it. Follow all prompts and if it prompts you that an update is available, please allow it to do so.

Post the C:\ComboFix.txt when it has completed.

Thank you for getting back to me, Ried. Here is the log from the 2nd ComboFix run. I am embarrassed to tell you that I neglected to allow the update. Still laughing, Fred

It worked out fine anyway, Frederick. :)

Read through this entire procedure and if you have any questions, please ask them before you begin. Then either print out, or copy this page to Notepad and save to your desktop for reference as you will not have any browsers open while you are carrying out portions of these instructions.

***************************************************

Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the code box below into it:

DDS::
uInternet Settings,ProxyServer = http=127.0.0.1:18810
uInternet Settings,ProxyOverride = <local>

Save this as "CFScript.txt", and as Type: All Files (*.*)
in the same location as ComboFix.exe

***************************************************

Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe

When finished, it shall produce a log for you at C:\ComboFix.txt which I will need to see in your next reply.

===================================

After ComboFix has finished, it's important to run an online scan to search for any remnants that may be lurking. Please go to here to run an online scannner from ESET.
  • Note: You will need to use Internet explorer for this scan
  • Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan
  • Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use.
  • Click Start
  • When asked, allow the activex control to install
  • Click Start
  • Make sure that the option Remove found threats is unticked, and the option Scan unwanted applications is checked
  • Click Scan
  • Wait for the scan to finish
  • If any threats were found, click the 'List of found threats' , then click Export to text file....
  • Save it to your desktop, then please copy and paste that log as a reply to this topic, along with the C:\ComboFix.txt
