A pal in S Carolina just emailed this to me.....

There recently was an article in the St. Petersburg , Fl. Times. The Business Section asked readers for ideas on: "How Would You Fix the Economy?" I think this guy nailed it!

Dear Mr. President,

Please find below my suggestion for fixing America's economy. Instead of giving billions of dollars to companies that will squander the money on lavish parties and unearned bonuses, use the following plan.

You can call it the "Patriotic Retirement Plan":

There are about 40 million people over 50 in the work force. Pay them $1 million TAX FREE apiece severance for early retirement with the following stipulations:

1) They MUST retire. Forty million job openings - Unemployment fixed.

2) They MUST buy a new AMERICAN Car. Forty million cars ordered - Auto Industry fixed.

3) They MUST either buy a house or pay off their mortgage - Housing Crisis fixed.

It can't get any easier than that!!

P.S. If more money is needed, have all members in Congress pay their taxes...

Mr.. President, while you're at it, make Congress retire on Social Security and Medicare. I'll bet both programs would be fixed pronto!

Too simple . . the liberals would argue that anyone who already has money should not get any . . the Republicans would say NO! out of habit without reading the bill

That is the epitome of sound, educated logic.

I think that actually can apply here too.

On an unrelated note: reading this made me realise there was a spelling difference between Forty and Fourty (US;CAN)

However I am concerned about one thing... if they receive $1,000,000 then spend $500,000 on a home and $25,000 on a car, they don't have much for their retirement.

I could have a very nice house for half that amount....spend another $50k on a car, and have $700k to invest in a lifetime annuity. I'd be set and social security would be off the hook. When I retired I had only contributed $60k towards my retirement but can survive on my monthly income.....just can't buy a new car. If I could have held out another 3 years I would have been able to have that new car......

I could buy a nice home for about 100K, already have a new car so I'd pay it off with 20K. 880K remains for investments and savings.

Thats so simple, and yet such a good idea...................I'm in, I'm only 47 give me a million I'll retire tomorrow, pay off my house keep my American cars I already have, split the rest in half and put half in the bank, invest the other half and live the rest of my life in comfort, and with the security the govt PROMISED me when I first joined the Navy

Let's see, 40 million workers. Give them $1 million each. That would be umm.... let's see.... still counting... $40,000,000,000,000. 40 Trillion? Is that right? What magic hat would that come out of?

Thanks for pointing that out. That is all I have to say.

I think it's just "forty", whether you're Canadian, British or American.

I never got negative marks for using 'fourty' in school.

I love when people think that 40 million people getting 1 million dollars only equals out to $40 million dollars because 40x1 = 40! No:
40'000'000 x 1'000'000 = all those zeros added together....
0'000'000'000'000
oh, plus the 4 ;)
40'000'000'000'000 - cool, we more than quadrupedaled the US debt! Awesome idea!
Current US DEBT: ~13'800'000'000'000 - http://www.usdebtclock.org/
