My Dell desktop would not wake from the "sleep" mode. I pulled the electric cord when the button on the computer did nothing. I waited about 30 seconds and plugged it in again. Unfortunately, there was a spark.
The computer would not start correctly so I had to go through Dell's Recovery process. That installed Windows 8.1. I got an antivirus going and then installed Windows 10.
The problems include no Edge showing in Programs, the Start menu will open only with a right click, Cordana does not work, the Office 2013 icons do not appear on the taskbar after I reinstalled the program. Any help will be gratfully accepted!
Edge should be shown on the Taskbar it is not listed in Programs but in Apps. Office Icons by default do not appear on the taskbar, but you can right click each program and choose pin to taskbar if you want them there. Go to Control Panel/Mouse and make sure left click is selected as primary button. To Enable Hey Cortana, follow this guide: How to enable 'Hey, Cortana' on Windows 10 - CNET
If you feel there are other things not working, go to Start/Search and type CMD, Right click the CMD results and Run As Administrator. In the Elevated Command Prompt type SFC /scannow and press enter. This will replace any missing system files.

just a quick note: I'd also recommend running the built-in Dell Diagnostics - to make sure that your hardware wasn't damaged by the brief over-voltage (the "spark").
If you have trouble using the built-in Administrator, or if a new Administrator account doesn't help, and if nothing else helps either: not the SFC method, not the DISM health restore, nor the Windows-Apps reinstall (Powershell commands) ... Start over again from Windows 8.1, or try a clean install. But make sure the hardware isn't the real problem first.
Thanks for your note! Yes, running the diagnostics makes sense. That spark made an impression, I'll tell you that!
Now for the latest. After several hours rest, the start button left click worked again. The tile box does not look the same as before, but I am not complaining. I found Edge in there, as well as my Office suite, so they are back in operation again.
The I tried to get Dell to help me restore my email as a screen in their Backup and Recovery process promised the emails would be saved. Dell wanted to charge me over 100.00 for that task. Amazing.
My other need at this point is to sign up with Comcast for my Outlook program, and then to restore my Favorites (and other stuff that I have on my File History disc) into Edge. I'll check online with Dell about that, and come back here if no luck there.
I spent the day reestablishing my Outlook program with Comcast, and restored my old outlook emails into Outlook-Hallelujah!
I could not get the Dell diagnostic (forget their name for it) to work, and I found someone stated that it would not work with Windows 10 anyway. But I did run a Windows diagnostic and it did not find any problems.
Again, thanks to you guys for your help and support. Long live this Forum!
I should have mentioned that the diagnostics I was referring to were those that run from the boot menu at startup ... Thank you to spunk.funk for putting in that info! The good news about those diagnostics: it doesn't matter what version of Windows [or Linux, for that matter ] you have installed.... the diagnostics are built-in to the firmware. No worries!
If everything passes, you might be back to enjoying your computer without headaches.
.... Here's to Bayer-free computing!
Cheers
