I ran memory and HDD checks on it but for some reason if i am doing BASIC multitasking it freezes and will never unfreeze. It really depressing. What could cause a problem like this?
Yes it came with Win 10 home. It does have a legacy setting as another option for uefi but for some reason acer decided to hide the ability to manually do certain things and i HATE that the current bios is Insyde Corp. V1.10, 27/11/2015 it came with 1.04. Sadly the HDMI cable doesn't work either. I really dont like acer. if you google my laptop you would see my post complaining about it

Please, be ensure that you would like to have there CSM OFF (UEFI) only settings. This might help you, and if your WIN10 is booting on CSM ON (legacy), U R in trouble, you do not want this (you might want to try to RE-install WIN10 with CSM OFF/UEFI option ONLY).
And, YES (I agree), you do NOT want Insyde (they R very good with Embedded, and U R NOT Embedded). :whistling:
You are Consumer Space, and you would like to have AMI based BIOS (but you need to work with what you have, unfortunately)!?
You should return it for a replacement, under a warranty claim. Defects do occur straight out of box, regardless of brand, you just happened to be lucky enough to end up with a faulty unit.
It is booting in uefi not legacy. Also I cant return it as I live in the Caribbean. to send it all the way back would be really expensive. Just kinda sucks. I was hoping someone new what was going on. I was even thinking of installing win 7 on it to see if it was some services or something that was holding it back idk . Just lost at this point with tons of work to do.
Expected that your 64 UEFI BIOS is set without CSM to boot UEFI compliant WIN10 64. If you have WIN10 32, then you have to have CSM ON while installing WIN10 32. Please, check on that, I am sure this is not the case (since I expect that you have WIN10 64).
HW advise: please, try also to re-seat your CPU in the socket, this might help.
If this does not help, please, try to disable C states (to have only C0) and turbo boost in BIOS, as workaround. If it does not freeze after a while, it is good sign, although it should NOT work this way (temporary fix). For you to see if you can live with this for some time. :whistling:
It is, thus, a great boon that Intel has already fixed the problem (implemented via a BIOS update) and is currently looking to propagate it to end-users via their OEM partners.
The Windows 10 drivers available there are all decently recent - from September 2015 .. should you wish to update any. The most recent BIOS (might be the one you already tried) is from January 7th, 2016 (it will likely have addressed the Skylake issue) ...
Generally speaking, even if you haven't already patched that Skylake bug, I wouldn't expect it to affect you during normal usage (the bug would normally only show up running benchmarks, or possibly very demanding gaming)... email, office/school work, browsing ... these shouldn't be affected.
Unfortunately, if despite all your troubleshooting and adjustments the freezing continues -- I'd advise returning it for exchange/refund also. If your trouble is from a mainboard (also called system board, or motherboard) defect, then it is highly likely to continue. Since you are under warranty, even though shipping is steep, you should only have to pay for shipping one-way.
Can't hurt to try and solve it while you have covered warranty time.... One more troubleshooting step you can take is to look in your Event Viewer error logs -- look for errors that occur just before, during, or just after the system lockups. Also, keep an eye on system temperatures.

Not sure if this is the case. Connie should check what is the latest MCU which her i5-6500U is running (from BIOS 1.10 Main Page info), and post here.
I became to be aware of this problem late in the game, End of January, so have no idea if January 7 patch solves this issue. Most probably not... The next one (BIOS update) will deal with this problem.
I am running on my HP 450 G3 ProBook also i5-6500U (SKL-U) BIOS 1.06 (Release Date: December 21, 2015), and I do not experience such problems. :nono:
It is all cool that you skipped BIOSes in between. They are wiped out totally from the SPI flash (SPI flash is cleaned) before re-programming new BIOS.
[P.S. ... evidently, the links that both _nobody_ and I gave worked for a bit, and then after some time, go to a largely blank page with only the phone number ... Sorry about that... You'll have to navigate the long way, starting from the home webpage at acer.com]
I went from 1.04 to 1.10 skipping 1.06 in the bios update. Is it cumulative? and i need to flash 1.06 then back to 1.10? I did the bios update a few days ago still problems. I am familiar with the site. I bought this laptop of microsoft store and from where I live will be so much harder sending it back and expensive but i guess that's my only option. Still cant figure out why my hdmi doesnt work and I know about the EDID and its not that either. Regardless thanks a lot guys
I think it is a likelihood that the January 7th Bios update addresses the Intel Skylake issue: the article about the issue is from January 11th, and mentions that Intel has already patched and rolled out Bios updates to vendors. And if we look at the notes for the 1.10 update, here are the changes listed:
1. Update Intel GOP/VBIOS to 9.0.1039/1033.
2. Update Intel CPU Microcode to MC0406E3_0000005B_0000005C.
3. Update nVidia 920M VBIOS to 80.28.8F.00.2A.
4. Update ME firmware to v11.0.0.1191
A Bios doesn't usually contain an update to "cpu microcode" unless its provided by the cpu manufacturer.
But this is likely much ado about nothing: I don't suspect the Skylake issue, since the freezes happen on the Acer when performing basic tasks. I wish it was from the Skylake problem, since the new microcode would have helped.
Tell you what: do the freeze ups happen as often as once a day? If so, you could test if they are Windows related or hardware related by using a Linux Live CD or DVD... and if the system doesn't freeze up at all in Linux, even when you are working it as hard as possible -- then we might be able to find a Windows 10 or driver issue fix. If the laptop freezes up in Linux too -- it's a hardware issue.
You can also mention if the laptop seemed very hot just before the lockups - or not at all hot. Too much heat when just writing a Word document or surfing the web might mean a fan isn't working well enough. If not hot at all, a malfunctioning chip on the mainboard could cause a lockup. Lots of possibilities. None that a brand-new user of a laptop should have to face just after purchase.
If your warranty allows for Acer to replace your unit with another brand-new unit free of charge other than the shipping ... and if all indications point to a hardware issue .... that's the choice I'd make.
Good luck!
[& hi there, _nobody_ ... I always enjoy reading your posts ... and as they say "two heads are better than one!"]
No heating problem ever and like every use is 5 or 6 freezes per he very annoying. Basic YouTube will seiz my pc. I'll make arrangements to send it back I guess.
I'm hoping that they'll send you a brand-new, perfectly working replacement, Connie. I like the Aspire laptops, I find the keyboards very comfortable - and the units are pleasantly light, with decent to above-average screens. Once you get a unit that works like it should, you should be a happy camper.
Great News!!! I found out from looking at my event logs that i was getting iastora event 129 which was cause by the ahci controller but no matter how i tried to update using the device manager or manually downloading it REFUSED!!. I downloaded advanced system care 9 which came with driver booster and it got me a ton of driver updates including the one i needed. I am sooooo relieved. Unbelievable if you ask me. Laptop is now running great to freezing no hickups. Thanks so much guys once again. I hope this helps someone else.

Good find on the iastorA.sys issue, Connie. It's one of those frequently installed drivers that often is not optimal or incorrect for the hardware! It's part of the IntelRST software, only required when using RAID or an SSD caching drive, your notebook only has a single HDD and the basic Windows drivers are all that's needed for that.
Agreed! IRST driver is a pain! I also had to uninstall it due to it causing my system to freeze while entering sleep mode. I'm happily running on msahci drivers now.
