Hello,

This is my first post for a long time, tech has surprisingly been treating me well. I am working on a client's computer right now - 1 year old Dell XPS 13 with pretty good specs. Machine will not pass the KB3206632 update. Logs indicate that it has tried about 30 times since the update was released, and I just tried it myself. It fails at 97% and indicates that it could not complete the changes and it is undoing the changes.

Any thoughts on fixing this? Otherwise, the computer runs perfectly with no nonsense going on.

Please let me know.

Thanks,
Will

Another update - I tried to reinstall Windows 10 on the machine using the Microsoft tool - it gets into the install phase and then it just pops up saying the Windows 10 install failed. So there is something wrong with this machine.... I can the SFC scan and it indicated it was fine. The windows update diagnostic tool also supposedly ran successfully. I am at a loss...

Run check disk on the drive.
Go to Start/Search and type CMD, Right click the cMD results and Run As Administrator. In the Elevated Command Prompt type chkdsk /R and press enter. Now type a Y for Yes and reboot the computer. At next bootup, Check Disk will go thru 5 stages and it will take a while.

Another update - MSFT released another cumulative update, that one also fails but seems to get to 99%. So there is something wrong with the general updating service or something being updated in that update. I think I am going to restore the system if y'all don't have any ideas on what this could be.

Thanks,
Will

Hi, READ FIRST:-

You are able to access windows is this correct? Go to settings and click on updates then from the left menu select "recovery" then “advanced startup” next "restart now" after restart select "troubleshoot” then “advanced options” from this select command prompt. You do not need to do this now just be prepared, I take it you have backed up your data, just in case a fresh install is needed.

First this has taken me some time and research and does not appear to have raised it's head in MS tech land before, so like most of my fixes I will do the work myself. The clue is system restore fails this indicates an inconsistent store (don't worry), effected by the failed update.

First thing you have to do (and please do not follow any other advice until we complete this (it works on test machines, so has a good chance on yours), the reference to backup is to be safe. BTW you should get the Win 10 fresh install option from MS first:-

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/soft...ws10startfresh

NOW TO BEGIN

First we need to see what you have in two folders, so press the win + x key together, select command prompt(admin) an elevated cmd prompt will open, to make it easier I put cmds you need to type in red:- (copy paste is easier)

dir /s /a c:\windows\System32\SMI\Store\Machine > 0 & notepad 0 (press enter)

dir /s /a C:\Windows\System32\config\TxR > 0 & notepad 0 (press enter)

Please post the notepad outcomes here.

WE will be deleting some of the contents of these folders, very difficult because a number of processes have a handle on them, this is why we use the RE (repair your computer) option and switch from the RE OS drive to your OS drive, for now just post back the two notepad outcomes.

Hi, boot into safe mode. Once in press win + x keys together click on command prompt(admin) an elevated cmd prompt will open.

At the prompt copy and paste:-

fsutil resource setautoreset true %systemdrive%\ press enter.

Next, copy each line below, pressing enter after each line:-

cd c:\windows\System32\SMI\Store\Machine
attrib -r -s -h *
del *.blf
del *.regtrans-ms

Next, copy each line below, pressing enter after each line:-

cd C:\Windows\System32\config\TxR
attrib -r -s -h *
del *.blf
del *.regtrans-ms

Do not worry if some say they are in use by another process we are only after those that are not.

Restart computer, (not shutdown, must be restart) try updates now.

Hi, what Anti virus do you use? Have you at anytime had another AV program on your computer? AV programs in-bed themselves deeply into the OS and usually many remnants are left after a uninstall, it is necessary to use the developers uninstall util in most instances, to be rid of them, the remnants can and do cause problems.

EDIT:- got called away, this site has the most comprehensive WU fixes:-

Windows Update fail to install or will not download in Windows 10/8/7

Thank you so much for all of your help! That is a good site, I bookmarked it for future use.

I did get the computer fixed.....it just required me formatting and doing a fresh Windows 10 install. It seems fine now. Even the Dell support couldn't figure it out. Something was ruined in the OS too deep to repair.

Thanks again,
Will
