I decided tonight to upgrade from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10. I'd checked the "Get Windows 10" icon for a couple of days but it kept saying that my upgrade wasn't yet ready. I'd also started seeing several "Windows 10 Update (Failed) in my update history. I therefore went to the direct download site and started the process manually.
After an hour of downloading, in which time I was watching YouTube videos, the actual install process began -- this took about a half hour. I was pleasantly surprised after the final boot to see that my Desktop booted up to look pretty much the same as it always has. Unlike Windows 8, which wanted to remove all "Metro" apps when I upgraded from 7, Windows 10 kept everything except for the Media Center in place. Even my Start8 Start Menu is still there and as functional as ever! All I had to do to get things exactly back to looking the way they were was to figure out how to reduce Cortana to an icon.
Yes, the fact that nearly every thing transfers over in its exact place is outstanding! Desktop icons and wallpaper stay, folders and files move over, its very nice how they did things.
Stardock is coming out with Start10 shortly but I don't see the point in upgrading to it since Start8 appears to be Win 10 compatible and has all its previous features plus a few more with Win 10.
I was pleasantly surprised to see that my Asus Xonar DG sound card installed under Windows 10 with no issues as with Win 8.x I had to hunt down and installing a Beta driver to get it to work.
My Ethernet connection seems as fast as always and I don't seem to have any issues with playing videos like others have mentioned. I have a 6800 series Radeon HD video card and its driver also flawlessly.
Playing around a little with Cortana I see it has one function that I'm really going to like -- namely you can get easily the definition of a word by entering "Define <word in question>."
i downloaded the update to a usb drive. then that way i dont have to re-download it every time i want to upgrade. i upgraded my laptop and 1 PC so far. and its working good. now i just have to learn all the new stuff. lol waiting to see how it goes before i install it on my Gaming PC
I removed Start8 to see what the Win 10 menu looked like. Turns out that I needn't have done it as Start 8 has a menu option to show the Win 10 menu (it's called the Win 8 menu but you can rename it by selecting Properties). On reinstall I got a message that Start8 couldn't install on Win 10, though I knew darn good and well that it could. It seems that MS doesn't want people using a menu shell before looking into the Win 10 Start Menu. All you have to do to install Start8 is to ignore the error popup.
I still like the old Win 7 menu style and file search. vs the new Win 10 tiles menu and Cortana, just as I like the old IE (included with Win 10) versus the new browser. I do, however like the browser favorites bar that you can add to the task bar.
